Pie/tart tin with “slider” knife in base

I don’t even know what the proper name for these tins is, sorry ..

I have a light metal Tala pie tin with one of those knife/slider things attached that loosens the pie from the base. Had it for ages, it’s like the ones my mum had (and I’m not young, so there are quite a few decades involved here). The one I have is getting a bit wobbly so I looked for a replacement … and came up with bugger all. Not Tala, not Prestige, not Lakeland. I eventually found one on Amazon from a Dutch company, but it’s non-stick and I can’t see how a revolving knife and a non-stick coating go together - also, cutting the pie in the tin will wreck the coating as well.

There are eleventy billion loose-bottomed tins available, but I want one the pie can stay in for serving. Am I just being an old dinosaur? Has the baking world moved on? Grateful for any sightings.

(I don’t live in UK but have family there, so an online order can be delivered to their address.)

I know exactly what you mean but no idea what they’re called, bumping for you.

Stanislas · 18/01/2026 16:06

I had one but it’s vanished. No idea what it is called.

Stanislas · 18/01/2026 16:09

One on eBay or Etsy called Ovenex slider. Postage from us rather fearsome

soupyspoon · 18/01/2026 16:11

By the way I spsecifically use plastic knives for cutting in my non stick pans and tins.

FourForksSake · 18/01/2026 16:20

I’d forgotten about these tins. My mum definitely had a pair of sponge cake tins years ago. I line with baking paper so I guess they are rather obsolete but…

booksnbaking · 18/01/2026 16:32

@soupyspoon That spatula server is really nifty! And you’re right of course, plastic knife is the way to go but it’s only a matter of time before either DH or I forget and attack the tin with a metal knife in a pie-craving frenzy.

Many thanks all of you for your terrific sleuthing! (I hadn’t even thought of eBay and Etsy, great inspiration! The vintage Ovenex on eBay are just like my mum’s, with the starburst pattern. Lovely ❤) The metal tin is definitely the direction to aim for and ships to where I am.

I knew MN would save the day. Thanks so much! 🙏

The baking world indeed has moved on but I know what you are talking about. To me they are old fashioned sponge layer tins, they have slightly sloped sides because cake shrinks as it cools and that ensured the top was the same width as the base. You see a lot of complaints these days about sponges being narrower at top than bottom when cool and how to fix it, there was a lot to be said for the old ways! I don't own any of them anymore but do have sponge tins with the sloped sides which make a better sponge, or at least more attractive even layers.

This is one of the results I get when I google cake tin with release slider

I got mine from Dunelm a few years back now

booksnbaking · 18/01/2026 20:05

My tin is actually really useful because it’s almost flat with really shallow sides, so it’s great for times when you don’t have quite enough filling to make a decent deep pie (like last night when I found the seal on a jar of apples earmarked for a pie had blown, and had to improvise grr). But it’s the slider that’s important, so all your suggestions are really helpful.

I didn’t know that about the slope, thanks for that @marylou25 !

Lots of great choices at good prices now, thanks a million to all of you. My pie-making future is assured.

My Mum had one , I knew exactly what you meant too Grin

JulieJo · 18/01/2026 21:11

I know what you mean. I had forgotten they were asking thing. My mum had one.
Lakeland sell reusable baking sheets. You can buy round ones of various sizes, or a roll that can be cut to size. It looks like plastic, i think it's silicone. Goes in the oven and hand-wash in soapy water. It works really well as a non/stick sheet, you would need to be careful when cutting but cod be a solution.

booksnbaking · 18/01/2026 22:48

I have a few of those sheets, never seen a roll of them before though! Great tip, thanks @JulieJo !

Stacey Solomon posted a reel today using those exact style tins. The comments asked about them and people replying said Home Bargains or Amazon. "Easy release cake tin"

booksnbaking · 19/01/2026 20:30

OMG. I’m an influencer 🙃

I saw that reel too and thought of this thread.

booksnbaking · 20/01/2026 23:43

That was why my search results were so rubbish. I was only looking for tart/pie tins, not cake tins. Tchoh. Thanks again to all 💝

I think I just searched for baking tins, sometimes google is rubbish if the search is too specific. Amazon is a bit like that as well
