Oh crap, should I have fried the sausages first? will it be horrible now?

I decided to make a cowboy casserole thingy, (never made one myself before but had one at someone's house once) fried an onion, added chopped tomatoes, beans, parboiled potatoes, herbs, water, oxo, pepper, couple of tablespoons of lentils, cooked them for a while then remembered the sausages! (shitshitshit) so I've just chopped them up, put them in the bottom of a casserole dish, added the beany mix and shoved it in the oven... should I have fried them or won't it make any difference? Tell me I haven't ruined it, I ruin everything.

i think it will be ok as you have cut them up. if they were sort of palely bobbing might look a bit scary.

you might find it needs a little extra flavour, as frying them would have added a bit of depth and maybe even sweetness. some worcestershire sauce? ketchup even. taste it when sausages are cooked.

It'll be fine - it's nicer if you fry them a bit first, but it will be just fine, and certainly not ruined.

Thanks, good to know it isn't a complete disaster! I haven't got any worcestershire sauce... hmm, I've got vegemite, soy sauce, ketchup, tomato puree, brown sauce, garlic puree, chilli puree, mustard, bisto, veggie oxo cubes (can you tell I'm a veggie? sausages are for my meat deprived dp)

I'll try adding ketchup, maybe a bit of brown sauce? this is usually where I ruin things, if I haven't burnt them first.

what was it like then james? it sounded very promising.

It was lovely actually! I made two, one with pork sausages and one with quorn ones for me. Tasty, nutritious and quite cheap to make. Served it with broccoli and we both enjoyed it, and so did ds (10m) since the only salt in there was in the baked beans and the sausages themselves. Might cover it in mash next time cottage pie style though.
