King/Three Kings Cake

I’ve been taking down the Christmas tree and decorations today and remembered something from when I lived in Switzerland for a few years (the German speaking part, a lakeside village in the canton of Zug).

At Epiphany (the last day of Christmas) all the town bakeries and supermarkets sold “Three Kings Cake” - to mark when the Three Kings (Magi) visited the baby Jesus. It is on January 6th.

A ‘feve’ (bean or a small statuette) is baked into a cake or galette (Galette des Rosie in France) and the person who gets the slice of the cake containing it is the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ for the day and get to wear a crown. I believe these cakes are eaten throughout mainland Europe.

I’m the only person in our household who eats cakes or galettes so it’s not worth me making one just for myself…but it’s a lovely tradition and there are plenty of recipes online :)

We've been stuffing ourselves with roscón de reyes in Spain this week. I couldn't be faffed making one though! They also have the little statuette of one of the three kings, and a bean - if you get the bean in your slice you have to treat the others!

Yeah I'm in Switzerland and last year I had the lucky slice and wore the crown all day. I really took my role as Queen quite seriously, the power went straight to my head. 😂😂😂👑

Edited to say this was at work too. 😄

We divide our time between the UK and France and alas we are in the UK atm. Our local baker has been making their fabulous Galette de Rois all weekend and I have serious Galette envy. On the other hand we’ve gone back on the Fast800 today so maybe it’s for the best that we are here!

I'm about to shop for the ingredients to make my favourite recipe for Galette des Rois to share with friends here in Athens (public holiday for the Epiphany tomorrow).

Served only once a year on Epiphany (6th January), Galette des Rois is a marvellous New Year party dessert

Yes! Much prefer the Swiss three kings cake (more of a sweet bread) than the French galette.

Will be making one tomorrow using the traditional Betty Bossi recipe (here in French): Gâteau des rois

I’m sorry, but despite being a native of Geneva, I cannot agree about the Gâteau des Rois, the Galette des Rois from France Voisine is far superior Grin Though I suppose I would say that, being half French!
