I’ve been taking down the Christmas tree and decorations today and remembered something from when I lived in Switzerland for a few years (the German speaking part, a lakeside village in the canton of Zug).
At Epiphany (the last day of Christmas) all the town bakeries and supermarkets sold “Three Kings Cake” - to mark when the Three Kings (Magi) visited the baby Jesus. It is on January 6th.
A ‘feve’ (bean or a small statuette) is baked into a cake or galette (Galette des Rosie in France) and the person who gets the slice of the cake containing it is the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ for the day and get to wear a crown. I believe these cakes are eaten throughout mainland Europe.
I’m the only person in our household who eats cakes or galettes so it’s not worth me making one just for myself…but it’s a lovely tradition and there are plenty of recipes online :)
