When l was dating my first boyfriend in the late 70s and got asked to tea his Mum " made" a salad.. was a red hot summer.. she gave me a plate with a slice of ham on with half of hard boiled egg.. half a tomato.. couple of lettuce leaves ( big flat lettuce) 3 slices of cucumber... a stick of celery and a slice of beetroot.. on the table was a big pile of bread and butter ( white sliced) .. and a bottle of salad cream.. ( they were very well off .. ( gifted us out first house).. for afters was strawberries and condensed milk.. my own Mums salads were roast chicken. ( she roasted one for the family) new potatoes and the salad was mixed in a huge bowl with extras like onion and carrot) . My salads at home are similar to my mums with some lovely bread from the bakers.. or feta and home cooked ham salad.. sometimes l just do a side salad with everything in.. instead of veg.. depending what we are having. I might add some fruit and nuts.. various dressings.

Ballymaloe’s red quinoa tabbouleh is the one I always go back to. It’s absolutely delicious!

I like a lot of protein and vegetables in a salad. I am not keen on leaves so rarely use lettuce or spinach or things like that

I am a massive fan of garden lettuce (butter or English lettuce), the lettuce you describe from the 70s, that is a lettuce as far as Im concerned you can keep your iceburg or little gem and even your romaine (although I will tolerate a romain). I hate radicchio or other bitter leaves. I do like rocket in small portions and chard is nice.

But my salad would be beans, vegetables, pulses, cheeses and meats/fish.

Always Caesar salad!! May in fact be my favourite food on earth.

That salad is what I was always served at my best friend’s house, if I was invited to tea on a Saturday! Along with tinned salmon, which was mixed with malt vinegar.

I remember when we were first introduced to vinaigrette dressing. Never realised there was anything other than salad cream to put on my lettuce Grin

My favourite side salad (i.e. one that isn’t created as the main part of a meal) is butterhead lettuce with some very finely sliced shallot, with a vinaigrette made with wholegrain mustard.

My default is Italian style - a crunchy lettuce (usually cos), rocket, tomatoes, olives, peppers, cheese, possibly some antipasto things from a jar if I have them in.

I do love a Greek salad too, or a tomato salad if we've got them from somewhere good (absolutely no point with supermarket tomatoes unfortunately). A friend made an incredible salad with watermelon, mint and feta which we've copied a few times. I also love a couscous "salad" and potato "salad" but don't really consider them true salads.

My salads for myself tend to be a glorious hotchpotch; there’s usually red/black/white quinoa, pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, spring onions, cubed roasted butternut squash or sweet potato, chopped olives, edamame beans, red onion, sometimes little bits of chicken, usually a dressing made of lime juice, ginger and a bit of soy sauce. I’ll add other vegetables and nuts/seeds depending on what I have. I make a big bowl of it and eat a couple of scoops at a time.

I'm already excited about summer reading these Grin

Either ceaser or rocket with loads of parmesan and reduced vinegar 😍

TomatoSandwiches · 01/01/2026 18:55

Depends tbh, side salads with our meals are mostly leaves, diced beetroot and plum cherry tomatoes, olives with a lemony dressing and salt, pepper

HeadyLamarr · 01/01/2026 18:55

Bulgur wheat salads (lots of different ones) are probably more favourite. Even in winter, bulgur wheat with fresh mint, parsley, diced cucumber, chopped cherry tomatoes, feta and pomegranate seeds is something I eat quite often.

But I also love salad niçoise with a tuna steak and French bread, Greek salads with all the accompanying dips and pitta breads, green salad with avocado and chicken for the meat eaters and feta plus a boiled egg for the vegetarians. And a homemade Caesar salad is pretty nice too.

Basically, I love most salads.
