Best way to dispose of chicken bones

Hello, bit of a random question but can anyone advise what the best way to dispose of chicken bones is? I usually buy thighs as it is a good ratio of meat to bone but find the bones start to smell after a few days, even in the bin.

My Dad always used to cut a lemonade bottle in half, put the bones in then fit it back together. Like a horrible little archaeological time capsule. V good for defeating foxes and managing smells etc.

Don’t you have food waste bins? At this time of year though if you put them straight out in the waste they shouldn’t get too smelly. Not much else you can do unless you can swing by your local dump. Try wrapping them before binning in film?

Can you make stock out of them? Then all of the meat will be removed and they will be ok to go in the food waste bin.

If you can't put bones in the outside general bin or food waste bin promptly then freeze them until you can.

Freeze them. I keep a tupperware box in the freezer for bones, meat scraps etc. Then they go in the food bin on bin day

We've used something called bokashi for the last few years. It's a very simple method that makes all food waste hygienic to compost, including bones, cooked food and meat.
We've got bins like these that we keep in our kitchen, and at the end of our day we add kitchen scraps and a sprinkle of bokashi bran. Once the bucket is full it is left to ferment for two weeks, which kills of any pathogens, and the 'pickled' scraps are then ready to be composted. It makes great compost and we find it very satisfying that we can return all our food scraps to our soil!

I used a code 'compostcon15' which might still work for 15% off.

But should say, I usually make stock before we compost them!!

FishPie2 · 14/12/2025 22:06

I buy boneless thighs but if I buy a whole chicken I make the stock and then put the bones in my Vitamix blender and they just go to liquid.
Before I had that I also used to freeze them and put them in the food box on collection day.

Put them in a bag and freeze then and the fish out in bin day. I use dog poo bags as they are black and easy to spot!

HoppingPavlova · 15/12/2025 06:32

Yep, freezer and then put them out last thing before going to bed on bin night if bins are collected early, otherwise as close as you can time with bin collection.

I double bag them, let them go cold, and put them in the freezer. Then i pop them in the food waste bin outside the night before the bin men come.
