name change long time poster

so I love feta cheese and have only bought it from major supermarkets however I was in a Syrian restaurant in UK this week and had a salad with feta cheese. Oh my goodness it was nothing like the chalky feta out the supermarkets it was so smooth and creamy and salty.

Cant now go back to the chalky supermarket feta. Does anyone know where to buy this lovely feta.
I know I should have asked what it was in the restaurant but didn't think at the time

Why on earth the need for a name change?

Give the restaurant a call. Feta does vary enormously. I find the brand names rather than supermarket own brands are best.

Aaah, the never ending challenge of finding decent feta in this country. I feel your pain.

I have been told that the trick is to buy at delis and stores that are mediterranean. I have not managed to do this myself as we don't have any good ones around here.

Weirdly, a good option is the Apetina white cheese cubes. they can't call it feta I think as it's not certified. They used to do slabs which were lovely but that isn't available any more, but the cubes are pretty good and 10000% better than any other feta I've found here. Tesco and Ocado sell it.

Second choice is the Waitrose Barrel Aged stuff.

I have given them an email , see if that elicits a response

I quite like it but find it's not creamy?

That's because it's a Greek feta. Syrian feta is different as you've noticed. The main difference is that it tends to be made with and/or cows milk too which makes it milder. Greek feta is made with sheep and goat's milk and the caproic acid gives it it's distinctive tang. A lot of the cheese you find in the supermarkets is imitation or very low to mediocre.

Each feta has it's intended uses. Your best bet is either the restaurant or find a middle easten/turkish grocers and ask them for Ackawi cheese. As to which brands are good I have no idea as I only have experience of Greek feta. The best Greek feta I've had is Epiros.

Sainsburys' organic feta is more creamy than the cheapo stuff, although IDK if it's what you're after.

Greek feta in Greece is still quite creamy i thibk, although not as creamy as other types, I agree.

Amusingly, this afternoon, after this thread, I popped into town to do the weekly shop and it turned out there was a little mini market on... with a turkish/Greek stall selling the lovely creamy feta as well as baklava, dolmades, olives etc! I picked some up!
