Ginger tea

I’m on the hunt for a really good spicy ginger tea. I like teapigs peppermint and liquorice but the ginger isn’t quite hot enough for my tastes. What should I try next?

Could you make it with fresh ginger rather than tea bags? Then you can control the strength by adding more ginger or brewing it for longer.

Its what they do in Netherlands. Grated with a touch of honey. I haven't found a bag as good.

I would always just use ginger from the green grocer myself..

JustAnotherMinionForAMerchantOfDeath · 07/12/2025 22:55

Hadn’t even considered making it fresh. Could someone walk me through how I would do it? (Why yes I am a bit dim)

Get your ginger, plump and juicy not wizened and dry.

Grate into a cup about a tablespoon’s worth . Add boiling water. Allow to steep for five minutes. Drink.

The ginger settles at the bottom of the cup so no straining through your teeth should be required.

I boil my cubed or grated ginger in the pan to get it really gingery. Then make tea with that.
you can buy ginger tea bags from Asian food shops. This brand - Royal Chai. Their masala tea is gorgeous too.

I’ve also used the stem ginger to make tea.

PashaMinaMio · 07/12/2025 23:26

Buy chunk of fresh plump ginger from Lidl.
Break off a one inch piece.

Grate that into small half pint mug or jug.
Poor on boiling water or just off boil. Doesn’t matter.

Allow to steep whilst you do something else. The longer you steep the stronger the ginger taste.

Strain the liquid through a small tea sieve into a fresh mug.
Dollop some honey to taste, into it.
Squeeze of fresh lemon.
Drink.

NB: I sieve mine because not all the ginger bits sink to the bottom and I don’t like the bits in my mouth.

EBearhug · 07/12/2025 23:27

I put thinly sliced slices in, rather than grating it.

bakermummy21 · 07/12/2025 23:34

Not a tea but I love a hot ginger cordial. Bottle green ginger & lemongrass is my favourite. Just mix with hot just boiled water

ShoveItUpYourArseMargaret · 07/12/2025 23:36

Oh I've been craving ginger lately.

I have previously bought ginger t-bags from HMart which are decent. No idea what its called though.

Also Clipper Ginger and Turmeric is good.

This works well if you put it into a flask or thermal cup so it keeps seeping into the hot water. You can add lemon juice or honey, and top it up with hot water during the day, using the same grated ginger that you already put in there.
Lovely, and a great remedy for coughs.

YourWinter · 07/12/2025 23:38

I put a knob of fresh ginger, half a lemon and a cinnamon stick in a mug and add freshly boiled water. Sometimes I use stem ginger in syrup, which is convenient but expensive, and the ginger syrup is sweet. Add honey occasionally, I usually forget.

BethBynnag86 · 07/12/2025 23:42

@YourWinter I've got some stem ginger and syrup left over after baking today-I'll give that a try😀

BilboBogginsAndHisNoggins · 07/12/2025 23:42

I drink a lot of ginger tea. Buy a fresh root. Slice thinly ish. Use a bit in a cup to make tea (honey if you like). Freeze the rest. Grab some slices to make tea.

Talipesmum · 07/12/2025 23:53

Have you tried pukka teas? I’m not sure if the ginger ones are strong or not, but i find their flavours far better than most other herbal teas. Probably adding grated ginger is the best though. Or there are some brilliant strong ginger cordials around too, to supplement?

karmakameleon · 08/12/2025 08:24

All the advice above is good. Grate the ginger if you want it stronger, or slice for a bit milder. Only thing I’d add is that you can make your own little tea bag by putting the ginger in a muslin square and tying up with string. This save the hassle of straining it.

stinky · 08/12/2025 08:35

Use a tea infuser, put the ginger and lemon slice in. Pour over boiling water and leave for as long as you like. Longer = stronger

ArcticGrass · 08/12/2025 08:44

Tea infuser or one of those tea pots with a strainer built in, that’s what I use for fresh mint tea…

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 11/12/2025 15:29

And dont forget (if thats your preference) thats it's improved by a drop of lemon, honey and a slug of whiskey.
