bought a mahoosive tray of mince from supermarket as we have GUESTS.

took it out of the freezer last night to defrost. tried to saw it in half with carving knife - nothing doing.

Most people are eating chicken thighs tonight. But i will not be eating such prole grub, this will be left for the children and the adults who think that pasta is foreign

so - upshot is that about 4 of us will be having mince and pasta concoction.

i will have half a large packet left - and thought i could do a shepherds pie for tomorrow.

as it came from supermarket chilled
was then frozen
will be cooked
can i freee it again?

am thinking yes - but thought best to check.

also don't own clign film - not buying it - can i stick it in a carrier bag to protect the tater
or do i have to fuck about peeling the tater tomorrow and doing it fresh?

hope this makes some sense.

I think once cooked can be frozen again

no idea re: cling film. You might be better off doing the potatoes tomorrow.

RubySlippers · 09/06/2008 14:49

yes you can re-freeze mince after you have cooked it

potato - peel and cut and put in a bowl of cold water and then they will be ok for 24 hours or so (when you are ready to cook them)

Have i understood you OP, or just told you how to suck eggs?!

Kewcumber · 09/06/2008 14:49

I think you can freeze well cooked mince even if its been frozen before - no idea about the cling film vs carrier bag. Why don't you cook it today then reheat it up in the oven tomorrow

MrsBadger · 09/06/2008 14:50

yes you can refreeze the cooked dish

it'll need something to cover it to stop the potato topping drying out
not sure how clean a carrier bag would be but I guess it'd do

or make it in a round dish and put a plate on top as a lid while it's in the fridge

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 14:51

yes, if for tomorrow why freeze? will just take longer to re-heat.

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 14:52

if in fridge can do potato topping. What kind of dish? Top with baking sheet?

TigerFeet · 09/06/2008 14:53

Shepherd's pie in a carrier bag will be fine, ime

Doesn't matter what you cover it with, so long as it's covered

And pmsl @ "adults who think that pasta is foreign", are you entertaining my inlaws? Never a bolognese has passed their lips I reckon. They only eat meat & two veg or salad with pork pies.

Kewcumber · 09/06/2008 14:53

covering the top of the potato with something else will help it stop drying out - tomato slices, cheese, breadcrumbs, sliced leeks

Aero · 09/06/2008 14:53

You can freeze it again once it's been cooked. I've not killed anyone yet doing this.

If you're going to eat it tomorrow, i'd not bother freezing it tbh - no need if it's in the fridge. you can also freeze what's left - spuds and all. Not sure if I've understood the op, but in essence, cooked meat and potatoes can both be frozen.

Kewcumber · 09/06/2008 14:54

serve the bolognese sauce with potatoes and veg on the side and tell them its "savory mince"

Tortington · 09/06/2008 15:04
