If you eat your Christmas dinner in the evening, what do you have for lunch?

Unexpected visitors mean we are moving our main meal to 6pm. But now I am unsure of what to serve for lunch?

I have teens who won’t surface til at least 10 so normally I would do pastries, sausage rolls, etc at 11 and then we eat at 3.30 ish but I think I need to serve something more substantial but preferably preprepared.

We always do this. I'm not hungry at like 3pm.

We do a big breakfast and then snacky bits for lunch - sausage rolls, cheese and crackers, smoked salmon etc. Get nice and hungry for the main event.

BadgernTheGarden · 28/11/2025 15:48

I would probably do pastries for 11:00 and the starters for a late lunch at 15:00 then the main course at 18:00. If the starters are mainly cold they can be prepared in advance. Pate, bread, salad or seafood, bread, salad or whatever you might normally have, just a very staggered meal.

NewCushions · 28/11/2025 15:55

Honestly, just buy more pastries and sausage rolls and just have them lying around for people to graze on, with extra crisps/olives etc if you need it.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/11/2025 15:55

we tend to go for a run or walk and then have brunch late morning, usually smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on bagels, and then dinner early evening. Instead of a starter at the table we have fizz and nibbles.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 28/11/2025 15:57

We have a normal lunch, maybe soup, sarnies etc. then dinner at 20.00

RudithJudith · 28/11/2025 15:58

Big breakfast and then celebrations, chocolate coins, crisps, cheese and nuts until dinner surely!

twistyizzy · 28/11/2025 16:00

We always eat at 6pm
So have a brunch around 11am of eggs benedict then around 4pm have a selection of blinis with different toppings + light salad. No starters.

muddyford · 28/11/2025 18:58

We have our normal breakfast at 7.30, then smoked salmon sandwiches about 12.15. Perhaps a mince pie at 3.45. We eat about 5.45/6.00.

Niche, sorry. Jerusalem artichoke soup; not an everyday thing so tastes special, and leaves space for dinner. Breakfast smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, toast and good marmalade.

I live on my own so if/when the fartychokes live up their reputation the cats are the only ones who suffer.

PersephoneParlormaid · 29/11/2025 08:02

A bit of a buffet. Crackers, pickles, cheese, gammon ham, bake at home buns, crisps, sausage rolls, quiche etc. My kids say that they prefer it to the Xmas dinner.
I don’t do a special breakfast, the kids help themselves to whatever they want, they usually Chuck a croissant in the air fryer.

Mynumberone · 29/11/2025 08:04

We usually have dinner around 5ish. Never have lunch on Christmas Day. We usually have a big breakfast and then lots of chocolate until dinner is ready.

Titasaducksarse · 29/11/2025 08:06

We have brunch around 11am..something substantial. It's then only 5.5 hours until dinner so apart from maybe something you'd serve as canapé I dont see why more food is needed?

WolfWolfieWolf · 29/11/2025 08:08

We have breakfast around 10- 11
Salmon
Bucks fizz all that
But also porridge and berries

Then chocolate for lunch

JudgeBread · 29/11/2025 08:13

We always do eggs benny and bucks fizz for brunch at about 11 and then just have plenty of croissants, muffins, fruit, nuts, scones and stuff in to nibble on if anyone is hungry before/after brunch.

OMGitsnotgood · 29/11/2025 08:44

We have bacon, egg and sausage butties in a huge roll.
if I was having guests for lunch on Christmas Day, I’d make a vegetable soup, and bacon sandwiches or sausage rolls

DancingNotDrowning · 29/11/2025 08:49

A substantial brunch at around 11 (scrambled egg, fresh bread, Christmas muffins, smoked salmon blinis) and then straight to dinner at 6 which is much earlier than we’d normally eat anyway.

The DC will snack on selection boxes/sweets/nuts whatever but definitely don’t need lunch if eating at 6

Prelim · 29/11/2025 08:57

6 is quite early for dinner, so brunch sounds ideal. What do you usually do at a weekend regarding lunch? Do the same thing, just move it back a bit so you’re not too full for dinner.

SquigglePigs · 29/11/2025 09:02

I'm planning effectively glorified cheese and crackers. So there will be obviously cheese and crackers, pate, a quiche, breadsticks, dip, ham, salad bits. Basically all stuff that I can prepare in advance and we just have to grab out of the fridge.

We have a 6 yr old who will be up before 7 so definitely need an actual lunch because breakfast will be early.

DiscoBeat · 29/11/2025 09:07

We usually have a decent breakfast, waffles bacon, bucks fizz etc. Then lunch at 2.00, which lasts a couple of hours. Much later a light supper

TheTowerAtMidnight · 29/11/2025 09:07

We have whatever we'd usually have for lunch any other day e.g. sandwiches.

StewkeyBlue · 29/11/2025 09:15

Breakfast: Panetonne, croissant , satsumas

Lunch Smoked salmon, prawns, brown bread.
A Christmas tree shaped meringue sandwiched with cream and fruit .
Mince pies

Fizz and canapés 6 ish

Then dinner at 7 or 7.30.

Chocs throughout

narkyspirit · 29/11/2025 09:21

Christmas Day has been

0700 in the Gym
followed by full english
lunch is beans on toast
dinner in the evening will be a fillet steak with veg and potatoes with Christmas pud after.

Onearmedscissor · 29/11/2025 09:27

We have xmas dinner around 6pm.

Breakfast is usually around 8am (after dcs have finished opening presents) and we have bacon baguettes/paain au chocolates.

We don't really 'do' lunch as we tend to arrive at my parents around 11.00am then leave at 1.30pmish. Then home around 2.30pm. Might have some chocolates etc at parents otherwise may have a few crackers/pate and pringles to tide us over.

PistachioTiramisu · 29/11/2025 09:27

We just have a normal breakfast, maybe Champagne with present opening around 11, then smoked salmon for lunch, then nothing else until dinner at 8.

SemmaLina · 29/11/2025 09:33

Lunch ( 12-30 ish ) is Starters , I buy some pâte , smoked salmon , make some bruschetta , anything else we fancy
