Dairy free hot chocolate

I love the thought of hot chocolate but it always made me feel sick. It seems I'm lactose intolerant. I stick to lactose free milk these days.

I'm wondering if I should try making dairy free hot chocolate?

What's the best recipe? I don't have a fancy velvetiser, I'd be making it in the microwave, I do have a hand whisk too make it frothy though!

Would dark chocolate work? Grated? Or is there a better way?

Tesco has quite a few vegan options not too expensive.
I buy from Whittard which is a bit more expensive.
I add lactofree milk from Arla.

The Cadbury’s powder is dairy free and I make it with coconut milk, nothing fancy but does the job!

I heat Oatly Barista Caramel in a saucepan and then mix it into Galaxy Vegan instant hot chocolate

Just use cocoa powder sugar and non-dairy milk. Oatly barista is good for this.

Lidls has a lovely chilli and cinnamon hot chocolate just now with no dairy. I make it with oat milk.

As a child, my grandmother always made us hot chocolate with just milk and chocolate (grated) and sugar in a saucepan. I can’t see why you couldn’t do the same with dairy free milk. If you are really devoted to microwave only, you could do it in the microwave with a hand frother.

Alternatively, the best chocolate I’ve had was with cacao, which is basically the same (it’s dried ground chocolate). Add to milk, microwave, add a pinch of salt, sugar and I add a bit of cinnamon. Heat and blend with hand frother.

Option 1 is to use cocoa powder and add sugar. Make sure you whisk the powder into a small amount of plant milk first, THEN top up. Microwave and sweeten to taste.

Costa and Starbucks both do dairy free powders that are quite good.

Green and blacks does a dairy free pwoder that is excellent but crazy expensive.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I usually use lactofree milk, although cinnamon oatly sounds good! I'll work my way through the suggestions!

I use dark chocolate, so naturally dairy free. Mix about 40g with the non dairy milk of your choice and microwave for a minute. Mix well, so the chocolate is fully melted in and glossy. Then mix in more "milk" and microwave for 1.5 minutes. Beautiful every time.
