Why do I have to defrost mince?

IF I'm going to be cooking it thoroughly, why do I have to wait until it's completely defrosted on the side first?

What is the science?

The frozen mince I usually get (tesco lean or something) says you can cook it straight from frozen!

BroccoliSpears · 08/06/2008 13:17

This was fresh that I froze.

I think I'm just going to cook with it. Surely if it's hot enough and cooked through then any potential bugs will be killed whether I wait for it to defrost slowly or speed things up a bit?

I often cook it from frozen. It's not difficult to check it's cooked thoroughly. Chuck it in the pan Broc!!

I do too, but it does tend to be more lumpy instead of small individual minced pieces iyswim.

SmudgeyDoodle · 08/06/2008 13:30

I sometimes do it from frozen too and we're all still here. Just make sure it's hot all the way through.
Had to post as I read the title as "Why do I have to defrost mice?"

I heard some expert on the radio once saying you can cook virtually anything from frozen (even chicken etc) as long as you cook it well enough!

Rachmumoftwo · 08/06/2008 13:36

I cook from frozen sometimes too, just be sure you cook it thoroughly. Never had any bad effects, apart from rubbery mince once or twice.

BroccoliSpears · 08/06/2008 14:44

Tis done. Looks a bit lumpy. Sure it'll taste fine. Thanks all.

you don't have to.

Just bung it in the pan frozen, and keep turning the lump over and scraping off the cooked meat with a wooden spoon, then turning over and repeating. It means you get nice 'minced' mince instead of big worms of it and saves time.

As someone else said, you can cook anything from frozen as long as you make sure it's cooked through.

Agree with OverMyDeadBody - you don't have to defrost it.

I read this as having to defrost mice.

As you were.

lucyellensmum · 08/06/2008 15:19
