Sides with macaroni cheese?

Got big group coming to us after a day out a football match for dinner this weekend. Planning to do a big macaroni cheese but not sure what sides.

Garlic bread? (Will we need more carbs?)
Salad? (Not much nice salad veg in season)
Coleslaw? (too creamy?)
Steamed veg? (Which ones? How to keep warm while everyone serving themselves?)

Green beans and broccoli
Vinegar based slaw and pickled cabbage to cut through the richness
love the idea of baked herby tomatoes too

Good call on the pickled cabbage. Serves the same purpose as my pickled beetroot.

Controversial perhaps, but I love pickled beetroot with macaroni cheese. I like the way the acidity cuts through the cheesy carbiness. Plus it fulfils your need for speed - I’d buy in a quantity from the supermarket and just transfer to a nice serving bowl. Sometimes I also make a carrot salad (basically grated carrot with a lemon dressing and a handful of chopped coriander or parsley on top, maybe some toasted seeds).

Such a good call, do this OP

Nothing wrong with more carbs: garlic bread, chips, pizza...

Anyway, do not contaminate a perfectly good macaroni cheese by mixing vegetables into it 😂

How are you heating up the macaroni?

I’ll make it in the morning under cook the pasta and preheat oven via timer so it can go in soon as we get back

In which case, roast some veg you can prep to go in with it.

Whatever you like. Par-cooked Brussels, broccoli, tomatoes, whatever.

Always double carbs! Especially after football and especially for a crowd. Garlic bread and or chips . I need to have a nice green salad with dressing with my macaroni cheese, but the rest of my family don’t care! I am also a fan of garlic mushrooms as a side if I don’t have any garlic bread.

Yes to garlic mushrooms.

No to double (or triple) carbs but I know that’s personal choice.

Sourisblanche · 11/11/2025 19:45

Rocket salad and a tomato salad. Baguette for those requiring extra carbs.

I would add to the mac and cheese. So make it more of a vegetable pasta bake. Add cauliflower and broccoli, sweet corn ans peas. Sun-dried tomatoes, chunks of cheese. Top with breadcrumbs mixed with lemon zest and almonds.

Serve with green beans with tomatoes x

Sorry but that sounds revolting to me. None of those things go together (for me anyway), it sounds like a fridge raid for when you’re trying to get a toddler to eat more veg without worrying about what it tastes like.

No more carbs. Never double carbs!

I think veg that can be kept warm and/or stirred in are nice with macaroni cheese. Peas or corn spring to mind. I also think broccoli is lovely with cheese sauce so I’d have a spare jug of sauce and broccolini or broccoli.

I sort of think of macaroni cheese as a side. So a ham would be lovely!

Edited

What?! Always double carbs with pasta lol. Definitely bulk pot with garlic bread then a simple side salad

muddyford · 11/11/2025 19:50

Garlic bread
I would do carrots, Brussels sprouts and roast parsnips.

Coffeeishot · 11/11/2025 19:50

FatBottomGirlz · 11/11/2025 19:22

In Scotland it is always chips 😂

I mean 😂

The thought of vegetable isnt appealing someone upthread said baked tomatoes that sounds perfect.imo

Coffeeishot · 11/11/2025 19:52

And garlic bread or even a baguette sounds good.

MeganM3 · 11/11/2025 19:53

I like it with peas!! And steamed veg (green beans, broccoli, carrot). Garlic bread too.

So glad someone else said beetroot!! It's our family tradition.
I also mix cauliflower or broccoli in with it. Or some peas!!

Thats cool. You weren't invited anyway.

ConnieHeart · 11/11/2025 19:56

Definitely needs some sort of bread with it. I wouldn't worry about doube carbs

Monkeymonster · 11/11/2025 19:58

Veggie sausages (with rolls for those that want to double carb). Cook them when you heat up the mac.
Green salad.

Blanketenvy · 11/11/2025 20:00

Broccoli/green beans and garlic bread.

EchoedSilence · 11/11/2025 20:02

Veggie sausages and garlic bread. I'd probably cook a couple of big pizzas too.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/11/2025 20:02

A winter salad, not with mayo. Red cabbage, celery, carrots, cucumber, cherry tomato, red onion, spinach or pea shoots, spring onion tops for the green colour, and a very light dressing of olive oil and red wine or balsamic or sherry vinegar.

bumchic · 11/11/2025 20:02

See I would do steamed veg but how are they staying hot while 11 people serve themselves? I can’t work this out

Otherwise I’m liking the idea of baked herby tomatoes - are we talking big’uns halved and topped with herby breadcrumbs and baked or small ones roasted on the vine like a pretentious cafe might put on its fry up?

YES to beetroot/pickled cabbage or vinegary slaw.

I vote pretentious.

But then I suspect being in the ‘no double carbs’ camp, that was obvious :D

Icecreamhelps · 11/11/2025 20:05

Stuffed portobello mushrooms.

BoarBrush · 11/11/2025 20:07

Mac cheese on baked potatoes is the ultimate food of gods.
