Pasta in thermal flask

My daughter is struggling with food. She only wants warm pasta at school. I struggle for time in a morning rushing for work. I’m trying to cook it fresh and put it in a flask but if I’m busy, can I cook it the night before and reheat in the microwave in the morning before popping in a flask?

It might be a bit of a soggy texture, but probably fine if in a tomato sauce. I wouldn’t with a creamy sauce.

I sometimes make a minestrone soup with lots of pasta for my DC, microwave it in the morning, and they say it is still good at lunchtime in a thermos.

Couscous also works well, prep it the night before, boiling water and cover in the morning, then keep in thermos until lunch.

I cook 2 days at once, leave it slightly al dente and microwave it the following morning.

Fine with basic cheese sauce too, especially if it's more al dente when cooked the night before

Yes of course, cook extra and warm up leftovers in the morning. I always pour boiling water in the thermos and pour out before putting the pasta in to keep it warmer.

My daughter loves taking warm pasta to school and I always make it the night before. In the morning I heat it up quite hot so by the time she gets to lunchtime it has cooled a little and is warm enough to eat.

DiscoBob · 03/11/2025 20:07

I would undercook it quite a lot first, then second time it would complete the cooking.

Oh wow! So I can cook double the amount and just heat up in the pan or microwave in the morning?

Yes of course, I do this all the time. In fact I freeze portions and microwave from frozen in the morning.

Yes that’ll be fine and if it’s mixed with a sauce it often tastes better

You'll need a wide necked thermos

My DD uses one by Thermos which comes with a spoon in the lid which is handy. Not that that’s necessary.

Thanks for the advice

I do this too. Works perfectly.

You also need to warm the thermos first. Fill with boiling water, put the lid, cover with a tea towel.
I'd also get an additional neoprene sleeve for it to keep it warmer through the morning.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/11/2025 10:07

DD takes pasta mug shots in a flask, thry work well.

mindutopia · 04/11/2025 13:19

Yep, it will be fine.

purpleygrey · 04/11/2025 13:30

It’ll be fine. Always heat the thermos first to keep to food warm.

pinkyponkyplink · 04/11/2025 17:18

So to reheat the pasta in the morning, can I pop it in the Microwave or is it best in a pan? I don’t eat pasta!

I microwave it until it’s red hot and add it into a warmed flask. I add a couple of tablespoons of water or milk to the sauce so it doesn’t dry out in the microwave.

Great idea
