What to do with 180 green tomatoes?!

I finally cleared out my end bed, which has been quite shady for a few weeks now. I knew there were still fruits but I had no idea there were this many 🤦‍♀️

I have retrieved about 40 that have varying degrees of red on them; if I bag them up in paper bags are they likely to ripen at this point?

And what on earth can I do with the other 140? It seems like such a waste to chuck them. I’ll google this question but in the mean time if anyone has suggestions or tried and tested recipes I would love to hear them!

I leave mine somewhere cool and dark (basement) and they ripen eventually.

That’s interesting - do you lay them out like apples, or in bags? Even the pale green ones, or is there no hope for them?

My nephew is currently arranging them into a spectrum of colour on the dining table so at least I’ll have them all grouped nicely!

Green tomato chutney?

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 30/10/2025 19:10

Green tomatoes chutney is really good.

Try spreading some out in a box with a couple of bananas. Bananas give off ethylene gas, which will help the tomatoes ripen, obviously keep an eye on the process and get rid of the bananas before they turn to total mush.

I put mine in brown paper bags on the windowsill in the porch. They all ripened eventually and I now have gallons of tomato sauce

Fry them and serve them at the Whistle stop cafe??

seriously my mum makes chutney and it’s lush

My Grandmother used to make green tomato chutney,I loved it.

I put them in dahl this year but I found that it only works well with tomatoes that have some red on. The very green ones are too bitter.
Ive had my tomatoes in a bag for a couple of weeks. Im not a chutney fan unfortunately.

Thank you! I’ve never made chutney before but I do like it. I’ve bagged up the redder ones and will have a good look at that recipe; I have plenty jars so it is a good idea

I have the same issue and don’t want to make chutney. I’ve found this page with lots of recipes: https://www.ruralsprout.com/green-tomatoes/

I’ve tried the quiche and fried green tomatoes so far, both very good!
