Can't peel eggs!

Apprenante · 22/10/2025 17:12

Well I can ... but it's fiddly and my eggs always end up looking very lumpy.
Can anyone give me some hints about how to end up with lovely smooth presentable eggs please?

Peel them in cold water. Gentle push them down till they crack and the shell comes off very easily and eggs stay in perfect shape

I've literally only found this out after a life time of incompetent egg cracking. When you boil them and as you are running them under cold water just give the pan a shake so the shells crack. And then they peel off perfectly when cold.

Roll them around on a hard surface till the shell is broken all over then peel off under cold running water

Thelittleweasel · 22/10/2025 17:17

Peel under a small stream of water from the cold tap

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/10/2025 17:17

Use older eggs and as @IAmKerplunk says, peel them in cold water.

Uricon2 · 22/10/2025 17:18

I do the straight into cold water cooling and only have problems if eggs are too "fresh".

Poached as new as poss, hard boiled a bit older.

OverlyFragrant · 22/10/2025 17:19

After boiling let them cool in cold water. Then lightly crush the bottom of the egg and simply peel off with your fingers.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/10/2025 17:24

Once boiled removed eggs immediately to a pot of ice cold water (if your tap water does not get cold enough then add ice). Let sit at least 5 mins. The cold water shocks the membrane to release from the shell.

Agree with PP's that if they're a wee bit older they're easy to peel. I don't bother with fresh eggs now as I waste half of the egg!

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 22/10/2025 17:29

Crack and remove part of the shell, then stick a spoon between shell and egg. Slides right off

Hurumphh · 22/10/2025 17:30

Use a teaspoon to ease the shell off

Pashazade · 22/10/2025 19:00

If you cook them in the pressure cooker they come off really smoothly, otherwise yes cold water. Put them in cold water as soon as you take them off the heat, also helps.

Perfectlypea · 22/10/2025 19:05

This method has always worked for me until I started cooking my eggs in the airfryer. For some reason the shell just doesn’t peel off. I take them straight out of the airfryer and run under cold running water, crack the shell but half the egg comes off too. The eggs are cooked perfectly but are very small by the time I’ve finished peeling them 😄

This!!! Its a life changer! Who knew to peel an egg with a spoon?!

Apprenante · 22/10/2025 22:14

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'll be trying the spoon method and also submerging the eggs in cold water. I didn't know about older eggs being easier to peel.
Unfortunately the other suggestions are basically what I already do unsuccessfully - I must just be a clumsy clot when it comes to eggs.

Put a teaspoonful of bicarb in the water with them before you boil them, and yes, cool them before peeling.

IAmKerplunk · 22/10/2025 23:00

Definitely cold water OP.
I swear by the Delia method - boil for 1 minute, take off the heat for 8 minutes then plunge in cold water before peeling in the water. Never fails for me and I have 2 boiled eggs every morning for breakfast 🙈
The cold water also stops the horrible grey colour in the yolk.

Ohthatsabitshit · 22/10/2025 23:05

It’s definitely how old the eggs are. A really fresh egg is much harder to peel and won’t come away clean. Leave your eggs a bit. Boil them. Drain the water out put them back in the pan and shake them so they crack. Fill the pan with cold water and peel the eggs in the water the shells will come off in one or two pieces.

Deliveroo · 24/10/2025 17:50

the trick is in how you position your thumb- you want the pad of your thumb against the white, and the nail moving under and up against the shell.

Instinctively we try to peel with the nail under, and the pad of the thumb against the edge of the shell. You’ll get away with that on older eggs, but take lumps out of new ones.

When you have the knack, the tip of your thumb will slide between the white and the membrane and it just slides off.

It’s hard to explain, but next time, just stop whatever you instinctively start to do, turn your thumb over and see if it helps

I gave up trying to peel cooked eggs and I bought those silicone pouches from Temu where you break the egg into this, boil it and it comes out as a boiled egg

I'm astonished to have had this many replies.
We'll be eating a lot of hard boiled eggs so that I can try them all.
Thank you!!
