We are not wanting to have a hot christmas dinner this year for a few reasons but want to have a Christmas style/ ultimate ploughmans!
can anyone recommend anything to make/prepare or perhaps buy from M&S etc to make it special?

Chutneys. Make some now and they will be delicious by Christmas.

Sainsburys do a festive edition gingerbread chutney

catin8oot5 · 13/10/2025 14:35

Nigella’s Christmas chutney is unreal and a doddle.

Comtesse · 13/10/2025 14:36

A whole Stilton?

Bjorkdidit · 13/10/2025 14:41

Pork pie.

Christmas cake served with cranberry Wensleydale. Mince pies.

Crusty bread and butter.

Another cheese to go with the Wensleydale, Stilton and chutneys.

Grapes and nice crackers.

Loads of apples around atm - make spicy apple chutney.

I'd go with this. I make a Christmas chutney which if I say so myself is phenomenal. It's made with apples, pears, dates and onions like a usual chutney, but I add balsamic vinegar and soy to make it dark, and cinnamon, mixed spice and cinnamon to make it christmassy. You have time for it to mature if you make it in the next couple of weeks. Alternatively, Sainsbury's and Waitrose do decent festive chutneys.

Pork pie preferably made by a lovely local butcher.

Also, some nice big handfuls of walnuts to go with the grapes.

Homemade piccalilli. I would also have pigs in blankets but then I would have those every day if I could.

OMGitsnotgood · 13/10/2025 14:51

Our local bakery does butcher quality pork pies.
I love pigs in blankets so would still love a vat of those - they go well with a ploughman‘s.
cheeses, crackers and / or crusty bread , grapes and chutney and I’d be really happy

This sounds amazing, do you have a recipe? Thanks

Game pie! Have made them a few times - bit of a faff but very festive / celebratory.

Or one of those pork pies with hard boiled eggs - gala pie they called it on Bake Off the other day.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 13/10/2025 21:25

Wensleydale, damson chutney, Christmas spice chutney, deep black grapes, ham cooked in cloves, Blacksticks Blue, walnuts, honey roasted chicken

It's mostly done by memory / guestimate each year, but as I just made it last week I'll write down the ingredients whilst quite fresh in my mind and post the recipe tomorrow ☺️

Some immense pate!

TeeBee · 13/10/2025 21:49

Let me know what time to arrive. Sounds heavenly!

pteromum · 13/10/2025 21:50

All of the above and a beautifully cooked in advance gammon. Sliced and delicious

strawgoh · 13/10/2025 22:10

Agree with the gammon idea - I baste ours in mango chutney. Also agree with the pigs in blankets. How about apricot & chestnut stuffing balls?

Farmhouse cheddar, Wensleydale with cranberries or ginger, Stilton.
Baked camembert. Several others.

A variety of really nice bread & rolls, Sainsburys do a good loaf with olives. They also do a lovely brown seeded baguette. I go every Saturday morning and buy one or the other. The bakery in Lidl is well worth a look too, they do some great stuff.

Ardennes pate. Festive pork or game pie. Salmon & asparagus quiche.

Cornichons, piccalilli, pickled red cabbage, silverskin onions.

Apples (green and red), grapes (ditto), dates, figs, nuts.

What time do we arrive?

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/10/2025 22:16

A Lancashire bomb. I'd love what you're having but my family have already decided they want traditional.

Seaside3 · 13/10/2025 22:28

@Redshoeblueshoe there's always boxing day!

If you can get them @Glow23 Fiddlers Lancashire Crisps are the best.

SeaAndStars · 13/10/2025 22:39

Cheese straws.
Coleslaw.
Pickled eggs.
Celery and carrot sticks with a wholegrain mustard dip.
Warm bread.
Scotch eggs.

Jsowny · 13/10/2025 22:42
