Recommendations for ready-made gnocchi, anyone?

Please can anyone recommend any particular brands of ready-made gnocchi? Dry, chiller cabinet, frozen?

I've tried various supermarket types and never found any that weren't gluey and unpleasant. But in Italian restaurants, I've had gnocchi that were pillowy and soft and marvellous with blue cheese and walnuts, and and and...

I can easily shop at a Co-op, Tesco and Aldi. A longer trip takes me to a Waitrose. Two nearby farm shops have some nice ready-made stuff but I need recommendations before I pay their prices. TIA.

I’ve found the Rana brand best so far. How are you cooking it? I always fry in butter.

I like the Rana pan fry one. I roast it in the oven with vegetables, topped with a piece of feta.

Agree with Rana, but only the plain one (the filled ones just taste odd to me) and only pan fried in butter

Another vote for Rana and frying in butter. Dp had gone off gnocchi and is now back in the room....

Oh wow! Thanks all. Rana will be the next one I try. (Although I'm looking a bit askance at the idea of filled ones...) The ones I've tried so far, I've just boiled and then added cream/blue cheese/walnuts/whatever. Frying will be next.

Oops. Tesco appear to only sell the filled ones. I'll report back. Although Rana say... "Cooking our gnocchi in the skillet creates a wonderfully crispy texture on the outside, with a soft, tender center. It's a traditional recipe, with a deliciously modern preparation. Plus, no more boiling water or draining!" The horror!

They're less stodgy if you fry them, and the crispness is ace. Give it a try! Definitely butter not oil though,!

I'm team butter!

Any particular combinations you'd recommend?

The Rana filled gnocchi is great, I tend to blitz it for a minute in the microwave just to get it warm then pan fry till it goes crispy. Otherwise it’s hard to find the balance between soft and gooey in the middle and not charcoal on the outside. I am however an extraordinarily lazy and cack handed cook.

CrystalSingerFan · 05/10/2025 19:45

Thanks! Do you just tip melted butter on the filled gnocchi? Or add stuff?
