Where can I buy jam jars that don't crack when sterilising in oven?

Previously I've re-used glass jars from supermarkets and never had a problem but I wanted to buy some for making jam/jelly as gifts. I bought a couple of clip-top jars from Hobbycraft to make kimchi and they cracked when I put them in the oven to sterilise - I then realised the label said Maximum Temperature of Contents 70C. This floored me! I always sterilise jars in the oven, pour the hot jam in immediately and put the lids on to create a vacuum seal. Can anyone please recommend a retailer that sells proper jam/preserve jars? Thanks.

Why not steriise jars in another way

sorrynotathome · 23/09/2025 08:09

It's not just the sterilising - it's creating the seal with heat. It's frustrating because every jar you buy from a supermarket with food in has no problem resisting the heat!

I make a huge amount of jam and chutney etc and I get my jars from eBay- I'll try to find you a link.

Try a proper kitchen retail store, someone that sells to trade.

Lakeland

Those sorts of jars are for storing dry things in. I just reuse jam jars and whatever I have to hand. I do have a few large kilner jars that have been used for jams etc year after year for over a decade so have definitely been worth it money wise.

Lakeland sell them. Dunelm also stock Kilner jars.

I just use boiling water and the boiling jam sterilises the jars as well. Or use a sterilising solution and rinse with boiled water. I've never put jars in the oven.

Think that should work.

I don't sterilise them in the oven- I wash them and give them a minute in the microwave (without the lids) and fill them whilst hot with the boiling hot whatever. Seal perfectly.

The boiling jam is hot enough that it creates a vacuum to pull down the seal as it cools even if the jars are not hot before filling. You definitely can't touch the jars without burning your fingers when you have filled them!

That was why I was shocked about the "max temp contents 70C" bit on the label!

Thanks everyone - I guess I learned to sterilise in the oven before la microwave was invented (ahem!). I won't be using chemicals but I'll try Lakeland/eBay etc for better quality jars.

My Lakelands get the oven treatment! ... but I am old-fashioned like that...☺

Raera · 24/09/2025 19:53

I use leftover jars in the oven, but have bought fancy lids from a kitchen shop with flowers and fruit on them.
When I give them away I always ask for my jars and lids back!
Surely if the liquid is less than 70, it won't be hot enough to make the lids pop and seal?

OxfordInkling · 24/09/2025 19:55

Kilner jars. You can get them from Amazon.

xsquared · 24/09/2025 23:54

The only time my jars have cracked from being put in the oven, was when I took them out immediately and the sudden drop in temperature made one of them crack.

I just wash them in hot soapy water, rinse, then swill with some boiled water before drying them out on low in the oven. Turn oven off then leave there until required.
