I froze sprouting broccoli, thinking I was being clever so it didnt go to waste, next thing I know Im getting out for dinner to find a load of green twigs and green gravel at the bottom of the freezer bag

Did you blanch it first?

As above, it needs blanching.
Having said that, I never like the texture of frozen broccoli.
So use it, or don't buy it.

RIP, but you could make soup with blue cheese ?

mamagogo1 · 22/09/2025 19:16

Yes to blanching, but it will always change texture

Yes Im eating some of the twigs tonight and the gravel can be used for something else.

Im disappointed, I purposely didnt cook it or blanche it first because as you've said, the texture of frozen broc I do not like. And I think its because it has been blanched before hand.

So lesson is to use it or cook it up in something else like a soup if its going to go to waste. I find it hard to get through fresh veg. I freeze a lot of things here.

I'm usually cooking for 2, we like a wide variety of veg, so I often have to be inventive with veg before it goes off.
Soup is obvious, but a mixed veg curry can be frozen for a while,

Yes Ive always got 'ready meals' that Ive cooked myself sitting in the freezer waiting for me, chilli, curry, bean stews, lots of veg in them which goes ok.

I specifically froze this on its own because from time to time I like something plain, like tonight, sweetcorn, broc and cod in butter sauce. 70s style, lovely it is.
