What can I feed a 2yo that is dairy free and will fatten him up? Need ideas and inspiration.

About a month ago I put ds1 onto a dairy free diet, and he has since lost a lot of weight (and was pretty small to begin with). He was eating lots of yoghurt and cheese, but won't touch the dairy free alternatives.

He is not an adventurous eater and won't eat potatoes or vegetables (except the occasional pea). HV told me to give him crisps on the grounds that they're potatoes.

I've made some dairy free cakes and pancakes, but need other ideas.

my dd is dairy free and doesn't like the soya yoghurts but will happily help me make yoghurt and fruit(using a blender)using greek style goats yoghurt and whatever fruit is in season(add a dash of honey and a ball of vanilla soya ice cream for extra delicious value)and it is even re-freezable so can be used in a lunch box

ps the chocolate brownies recipe on the recipes section of mumsnet was a big hit too..we just used her dairy free spread and her chocolate and it was fine!

Will check out the brownies recipe.

Goat's yoghurt is not popular.

Why not give him crisps if he needs fattening up? You could get the no salt or low salt organix ones (I think they're corn mostly but quite tasty IMHO)

Peanut (or other nut) butter?

WilfSell · 02/06/2008 20:58

nuts?

WilfSell · 02/06/2008 20:58

dried/fried banana chips?

MuffinMclay · 02/06/2008 21:01

Lots of good ideas there, thank you. I didn't realise that you could get low salt crisps.

Any more? Going shopping tomorrow so the more ideas the better.

Rice pudding made with rice milk?
Agree nut butters on toast/sandwiches.

I didn't think he was small to begin with!
Have his problems cleared up with the dairy free diet?

Will he eat avocado and egg yolks?

WilfSell · 02/06/2008 21:05

chocolate covered raisins?
sweet potato? roasted in olive oil?
meat: bacon?
could you try gently frying potatoes and veg in a kind of rosti/bubble and squeak?
coconut milk has millions of calories and if you want to try lots of things you could make lentil dahl with it (my kids like this with lots of garlic)

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/06/2008 21:11

Chocolate covered raisins are normally made with milk chocolate though WS!

cook things in more oil than you would for yourself

sandwiches with dairy free spread

Avocadoes

Eggs

Make cakes using things like walnuts and oil

Bananas

You can use the soya yoghurt in pancakes (american style) and maybe he won't realise??

It's hard though, my nephew is dairy free and he's very skinny even though he has an enormous appetite.

WilfSell (fab name btw) - thank you, brilliant ideas.

CSWS - I'll get dh to make him some rice pudding. It is the one thing I really can't bear to cook, let alone eat (smell makes me vomit).
Yes, he is still mostly in 12-18 month trousers but they are starting to fall down. He was 12kg at some point, went down to 11, and has lost weight again in the past week or so.

He will do eggs and egg yolks. Haven't tried avocado for a while - worth a go.

You can also drizzle olive oil into dishes even if they haven't been cooked in it eg. pasta sauces, casseroles etc.

Another vote here for avocado! What about bananas, they're pretty high-cal...
