How much yoghurt is too much yoghurt?

I love plain, full fact Greek yoghurt. Although it's high in fat compared to other yoghurt, it's low for what (to me) feels like a luxury desert.

I don't need to lose weight but I am trying to be a bit more healthy and I know I am better in myself when I cut out refined sugar and too much bread.

So, now I am having yoghurt when I might previously have reached for toast or a sugary snack. Sometimes on it's own, or with fruit or nuts.

Can you overdose on yoghurt?

‘Too much’ of anything isn’t ideal but its yoghurt, you’re not going to overdose.

How much are you having? I’d say more than about 500g a day could be seen as unreasonable, but who am I to say - I eat six apples a day to stop me eating crisps and chocolate and that always upsets mumsnet.

I get through 2 1kg tubs a week, plus take 2 small pots for my lunch every day.

I have at least 300g a day with museli fruit honey nuts etc. I’m addicted!! 😋

So that’s about 700g a day. Its certainly a lot but as long as that’s not all you’re eating, I’d crack on.

I have about 200g of Greek Style (I don’t like ‘real’ greek or Fage) yoghurt morning and evening with an apple or two and could happily eat more.

I think there are much worse things you could be into. I’d just be grateful it isn’t something grim, like diet coke.

It's not good to have too much of any food in your diet. Try to include as much variety as possible. I would decrease the amount of yogurt you are eating, it sounds excessive to me.

Probably good for your bones - but not great if you've got high cholesterol. I eat a lot of yoghurt - not that much as I'm trying to lose weight - but most days I'll eat full fat yoghurt.

I love greek yogurt too (I like the 5% one), through the summer I'm eating Tzatziki with most meals! My doctors says its great for digestion so eat as much as I like.

Having said I wouldn’t worry about it health wise, its worth noting that the amount you’re getting through (2 x 150g pots and about 300g from the big tub) could well come to about 700 calories a day for some full fat greek yoghurts.

My bog standard ‘greek style’ is 100 calories per 100 grams.

I know you said you don’t need to lose weight but if you’ve just added this yoghurt to whatever meals you were eating before it could start to affect your weight before too long, especially if you continue to increase the anount of yoghurt or take advice such as to put nuts, seeds or honey on top of it.

I was very interested to read once that a lot of weight gain in middle age happens because people keep adding foods to their normal diet ‘for health’ - particularly at breakfast - but don’t cut back anything and end up unwittingly eating many more calories than they need.

It not extra, it's in place of the sugary snacks and toast I was having.

I do loads of exercise, my Garmin is showing more than 2000 calories already today. I don't need to worry about that too much, but I do know I feel better in myself without the sugar.

I would worry about the amount of saturated fat you are consuming every day by having 700g of Greek yogurt. Have you calculated how much fat you are taking in?

It's not the calories which would worry me especially as you have calculated it as part of your daily allowance.

For women, the saturated fat allowance is no more than 20g per day in the UK, which equates to less than 10% of total daily calories, according to the NHS and the British Heart Foundation. This recommendation is part of a larger guideline that suggests women should aim for around 70g of total fat per day, with the majority coming from unsaturated sources.

I don't eat anything else fatty though, very little meat so I think that's probably Ok. My cholesterol is well within the guidelines.

It's a lot of yoghurt but you're clearly healthy so I would crack on. Definitely better than chowing down on toast and sugar. You might find you get fed up of it, and if you do, that's probably your bodies way of telling you enough is enough. We need to trust our instincts a bit on these things.
