Calling all French cooks

I've just come back from a trip to France, thinking (as I always do after a trip to France) - why don't I cook like this more often? Simple, classic recipes with lovely ingredients. Which led to come on here and ask if anyone can recommend a really good recipe book for traditional/classic French food. I've got Elizabeth David, but to be honest I find the format a bit old-fashioned and uninspiring. So I guess I'm looking for something with a more modern feel (the book, not the recipes, IYKWIM). Ideally something available in English, though if the perfect book exists but only in French, I could get by. Any ideas???

My (French) MIL gave me La Cuisine Familiale et Pratique

Which made me snigger, still does, because it's very old fashioned (so prob not what you are looking for) but is an interesting lesson in traditional French cuisine.

Thanks Castille. Blimey, I wouldn't fancy having to cook for a French MIL! Any other suggestions??
