If you had to take something to a party/buffet for 40 people

What would you take? A mixture of adults and kids.

The easiest thing will be cheese, crackers, meats and fruits and crisps. I think most people will bring the same and we will be overrun with cheese! Not a problem for me but I’d like to take something different, maybe something the kids will enjoy?

Cupcakes? brownies? Assorted small cakes?

BarbaraVineFan · 07/09/2025 20:22

If I had time and energy I would make fruit kebabs, maybe with some marshmallows as well, and take a couple of big bottles of chocolate sauce to go with them. Otherwise, just a few big bags of those mini bags of Haribo would go down well if you don’t have much time.

Ilovelurchers · 07/09/2025 20:22

As you have mentioned kids, I would probably bake a sweet. Maybe a big tray of brownies? Or flapjack/oat based cookies is an easy win, if you aren't an especially skilled baker.

Or if you want to do something savoury, I would make a large rectangular pizza maybe? With toppings of you choice - maybe do it in quarters so you can cater to a range of tastes?

CountryQueen · 07/09/2025 20:23

Yes, I’d thought maybe doughnuts. Don’t eat them myself but I think the kids might like them…

Whenever I have to do this I make doorstep ham and cheese sandwiches in white bread. It's probably the least elegant thing you can take but children (especially boys - of all ages up to about 80) fall on them and they're always the first thing to go.

Cocktail sausages

farmlass · 07/09/2025 20:24

Home made sausage rolls. Well sort of !
puff pastry and then either finish with Parmesan ,pepper or sesame seeds sprinkled on the egg wash .
really easy and nice cold

Love pizza. It has to travel though, I don’t know what cooking facilities we have so has to be something I can transport and put straight on the table.

There are more adults than kids but I expect most will bring cheese, charcuterie etc

Hasn’t the host offered a suggestion? I’d take humous and other dips and crisps and breadsticks maybe.
or olives!!

Greenangellite · 07/09/2025 20:26

Something with protien. Satay sticks or a home made quiche go down well.

No, just to bring something for a big buffet

I made mackerel pate recently, serve with Melba toasts

SquigglePigs · 07/09/2025 20:43

Dips and crudités would be my go-to for this. Plus breadsticks and crisps for dipping.

1AnotherOne · 07/09/2025 20:44

Pinwheel wraps, really easy and travel well

Unforgettablefire · 07/09/2025 20:50

You can never go wrong with quiche or a home made pie.

Pizza can be cooked and cooled and will travel fine as long as it’s refrigerated before packing up. Love cold pizza 😁

Take something good or you and your uber driver may get the pear of anguish!

TheLadyIsAVamp · 07/09/2025 21:04

@EeveePeevee DEATH ROW!!

GordonRamsey · 07/09/2025 21:04

20 Pot Noodles, (not everyone will have one)

MissBattleaxe · 07/09/2025 21:08

Marmite pinwheels. Spread marmite on puff pastry, roll up, slice and bake. They're like snack heroin.

Brownies come ready mixed IE Betty Crocker, just add eggs I think. Easy peasy

Eton mess
trifle
fruit platter
watermelon slices
strawberries and cream
Smoked salmon
pasta salad
potato salad
coleslaw

All things we have taken in the past and gone down well.

Ineffable23 · 07/09/2025 21:21

Any of:

A cooked ham
Quiche
Sausage rolls (buy puff pastry, buy sausage meat, grate an onion, ideally spread a bit of chutney on the puff pastry before construction)
Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches (dice some mint very small and mix it through the cream cheese)
Crispy cakes (I do one with cocoa, butter, icing sugar and golden syrup boiled up and then mixed with cornflakes or crispiest - incredibly popular with children and adults alike).

Notalertedtoday · 07/09/2025 21:23

I’d take salads. Homemade coleslaw using Hellmans, potato salad and Caprese salad. 2 bowls and a tray can be easily transported.

sparklychair · 07/09/2025 21:28

Big bunch of grapes. Celery sticks with home made blue cheese dip. Marinated king prawns on toothpicks. Devilled eggs.
