I’m popping over, what can you give me?

I never have any food other than meals in. It’s not a cost thing (thankfully), it’s more that any snack type things I might buy eg ham, quiche, hummus doesn’t get fully eaten within the use by: it’s really wasteful. The result is my cupboards/fridge are bare and I’ve never got a snack to offer someone. My daughter complained about this today (13). And she’s right. Today she ate out so I don’t feel like cooking - but yet again, there is nothing in the house other than a meal.

If I popped to yours today, what can I have?
or let’s say if I popped to yours on Tuesday at 3pm (saying this as it’s Sunday and you might offer me a roast meat type sandwich (which I would love btw!)

All and any snacking ideas / or very light meals are welcome. Also sweet stuff. But needs to keep unless sold in small amounts. I’m not dieting so happy to hear about all kinds of food!

Thank you

I’ve always got fruit and vegetables, crackers, cheese, hummus. There’s always nice bread and soup in the freezer.

Nannyfannybanny · 07/09/2025 18:26

What is condensed cream? I've heard of condensed milk, full of fat, sugar and calories..

ohtowinthelottery · 07/09/2025 18:26

There's always sliced bread from the bakers in our freezer so I could make you a sandwich with cheese, eggs or tuna at the very least. An omelette would be another option, again with cheese or maybe mushrooms.
Sweet things would be more difficult. If you're lucky I might have a kit kat or similar in the tin but I tend not to buy biscuits very often as I'll eat them and only make cake for specific events so you wouldn't get any if you called at short notice.

soupyspoon · 07/09/2025 18:29

Oh yes like others we have popping corn in all the time so can do that

We dont eat bread or bready products so never have any of that. So while we have a plethora of lovely cheeses, you would be eating that with home grown chopped up tomatoes and some cucumber chunks. Or some beetroot. Not everyones cup of tea, most people like a bit of bread or some crackers or something

I have some mini potatoes that I can crisp up in the airfryer, they're great

AdaColeman · 07/09/2025 18:30

Just popping in for a snack? I'm sure you'd like a G&T too? Gin Gin Gin
Snacks galore here....nuts, crisps, olives, cheese, cocktail sausages, salami. From the freezer....pizza, snails with garlic butter, fish fingers for sandwiches, mini savoury pastries.
Not so much choice on the sweet side.....chocolate filled brioche rolls, madeleines, chocolate filled crepes, two types of ice cream.

caringcarer · 07/09/2025 18:34

Cooking roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots and peas with wine gravy. No dessert though.

DryAndBalmy · 07/09/2025 18:36

I’m the same as you.
Just ingredients for planned meals.
If you need a snack I can offer you a banana? Some nuts? Some yoghurt and berries?

I made a tub of breakfast bars today! Really easy. Loads of oats, chia, mixed seeds, nuts, coconut, a little dried fruit and cocoa nibs glued together with light condensed cream, bake on 100 degrees for an hour. Absolutely no skill required and tastes amazing.

May I have the recipe please

soupyspoon · 07/09/2025 18:40

I dont think my oven goes down to 100 degrees

Buy some tins, olives (Waitrose ones are so lovely)
Chick peas, so you can always whip up a hummus and frozen pittas
Tuna - make the Italian tuna bruschetta
Part baked breads and danish pastries in the freezer
Mini spring rolls in the freezer
Homemade frozen biscuit dough
Frozen pizza dough, either make mini pizzas or dough balls
Frozen chilli, jar jalapeños, to make chilli nachos
You don’t need lots in, there’s always a shop open most times

And confit chickpeas with cumin/salt are so delicious to snack on!

Unsure if you avoid bready stuff due to tolerance issues or avoiding UPF but if it's the latter I believe ryvita are not UPF.

I can tolerate ryvita actually but we dont have any in

I cant really eat bread its uncomfortable, that said I do make bread from time to time and my own bread is very very nice. Too nice!!

Anyway, no bread in the house today.

Another request for a recipe or proportions please.
We have started meal planning as trying to eat healthily and reduce waste.
Now I am retired I would like some snacks to have with a cup of coffee and we like a mini treat in the evening too.
TIA ☺️

OhNoNotSusan · 07/09/2025 18:50

i could make you spaghetti bolognaise,
or lentil spaghetii
if you gave me notice i could defrost sausages
but there are plenty of vegetarian dishes i could cook, have beans, halloumi, pasta, plenty of cheese

DistantConstellation · 07/09/2025 19:00

Oh yeah halloumi in its sealed packet keeps for ages. Would have that on wraps with some cucumber, plus a bit of faux tzatziki plain yoghurt mixed with mint sauce.

Got some of those Itsu dumplings in the freezer too, can make a dipping sauce for those.

This is basically a list of my WFH lunches Grin

Arlanymor · 07/09/2025 19:04

I've got sod all in at the moment as out of the last 14 nights I have only spent two of them in my own bed, so no point having stuff in the fridge. But, after Ocado come tomorrow, normal service will be resumed and I will have:

  • Flatbreads, dips and crudities (carrots, celery and cucumber)
  • Popcorn - you can cook kernels in the airfryer you know!
  • Bacon cream cheese bagels - these are epic, given them a go!: https://www.dontgobaconmyheart.co.uk/bacon-cream-cheese-filled-bagels/
  • Salad stuff - to which I can add cheese or ham for some protein, I really need to find some failsafe pasta salad recipes, something tangy...
  • Eggs - someone upthread mentioned shaksuka, it's so easy, quick and tasty - just add eggs to chopped toms, chickpeas, peppers and chorizo - and ideally with a big old dollop of greek yoghurt too and spices

I probably have some biscuits at the back of the cupboard too, but I do my best not to snack on sweet stuff if I can avoid it.

Bacon Cream Cheese Filled Bagels

These bagels are loaded with a gooey, cheesy bacon filling and could not be more delicious!

Dabberlocks · 07/09/2025 19:05

Beef meatballs, onion gravy, new potatoes in herb butter, green beans and carrots.

We haven't got dessert planned, but there's some chocolate digestives.😁

Tuesday at 3pm you'd go hungry because we're out.

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 07/09/2025 19:06

Bagels and cream cheese

Gingerbread

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/09/2025 19:06

It would be liquid only in my home. If you want to eat, do so before or after you pop in unexpectedly as I don't have snacks.
I had to stop my DNephew rampaging through my kitchen as the little sod did not believe I had no biscuits in the house.

TheGirlWhoLived · 07/09/2025 19:13

I have all the small-kid-friendly snacks (dairylea dunkers, mini sausage rolls, raisins, Pom bears, rice cakes, cheesestring etc)

I can usually be depended on to put together a cheeseboard at any given moment, and the grapes/berries are refreshed every couple of days. Almonds and cashews are always open, I can usually find a pack of biscuits or a kitkat and the ice lolly drawer always has at least mini milks and rocket lollies in!

We always have some sort of deli meat, antipasto, decent breadsticks and houmus, and always a bag or 2 of sharing kettle chips type things.

I do get a fair amount of random drop ins though so I can chuck something on the table to nibble on!

Heyhiitsme · 07/09/2025 19:25

I always have loads (‘perk’ of growing up in food poverty) - though honestly if you rocked up unannounced right now I’d probably just chuck you half the bag of twirl bites I’m currently demolishing and refuse to move 😂

It does matter how you plan/shop/cook though - if you’re not going to eat it there’s no point! We’re big snackers, so always have in a variety of dips/veggies/fruit/carbs/cheese to whack together - right now I could offer you homemade pretzels (with humous or cream cheese to dip), cheeses and crackers, a veggie sausage sandwich, pasta/frozen pizza, beans/eggs/cheese on toast, fruit/fruit salad, possibly on top of a meringue nest with whipped cream, veggie sticks, yoghurt/berry covered rice cakes, a granola bowl, possibly a fresh cookie if I have any dough left in the freezer… And from all of that, most is either long-lasting stuff I buy that won’t go out of date, or stuff I have in naturally for meals (veggies/cheese/eggs/yoghurt)

Whatwouldnanado · 07/09/2025 19:32

I’d ask if you’d had lunch? If not I’d make you an omelette with cooked gammon, cheese, mushrooms from the fridge and a salad. Hot bread from the freezer if you fancy. If you had lunch earlier there could be scones made while we chatted. Cheese and chives snipped from the garden with cheese and chutney, or plain or fruit with butter and home made jam. There’s a fruit cake in the tin too.

Defiantlynot41 · 07/09/2025 19:38

Realised I had turned into my mother (who epitomised the Beattie BT ad - if I’d known you were coming I’d have got something in/ cut to fridge groaning with food) when I produced with no notice a decent charcuterie board - 2 types of cheese, walnuts, olives, saucisson sec, crackers and apples picked from the tree! 🤦🏼‍♀️

zippydeedoo · 07/09/2025 19:40

Nothing exciting, but you're welcome to a crisp sandwich or a bowl of cereal??

slanksy · 08/09/2025 18:54

Thanks for all your replies (and for the offers of Gin and Wine!) Some great ideas here.
Thanks again.
