Might be a daft question but how do you make soup without a soup maker?

I'd like to try making homemade soup. It would be either lentil soup or a vegetable soup of some kind. Obviously having a soup maker (Ninja etc) would make it easier, but I'm sure people made soups before soup makers existed. How would you do it without a soup maker? I am actually wondering if I should just cave in and buy one. 😄

Just in a saucepan. Then you can either tip it into a blender or food processor, use a stick blender in the pan, go really retro and push it through a sieve, or have a chunky soup

I use a pan or a pressure cooker.

Have made soup for decades, never used a soup maker. Regular pot and a blender is all you need.

You don’t need a soup maker - I’ve got one, but if I don’t want the faff of getting it out of the cupboard and the cleaning, I use a saucepan and a stick blender (if it needs it). Sometimes just a good stir or a squish with a potato masher is enough. Save your money and try th simple way first 😁

Ohh lentil soup is my favourite and absolutely does not need a soup maker.

get a nice big pan on the hob
Peel and slice 1/2lb of onions
peel and chop 1lb carrots
add both of these to the pan with 1/2lb red lentils
Pour in 4 pints of ham stock and bring to the boil. Turn to a simmer and leave for about 20 mins (or until the carrots are soft). Give it a taste and season with salt and pepper and the purée with a hand blender.

this recipe makes loads (I did say it was my favourite) but you can halve it very easily and it freezes brilliantly

Yes use your largest pan, or a stock pot, as you will need room for the stirring without splashing. No need for a soup maker at all

You don’t even need to blend. Chop up the vegetables small, fry in a saucepan with a bit of olive oil, add stock and cook until done - under 30 mins for a speedy soup or cook long and low for added flavour. Job done.

Just use a pan like most of us do. IMO soup makers are unnecessary gadgets that just take up kitchen space.

There are loads of great recipes online.

I've never used a soup maker, didn't know they existed until just now.

If you don't have a stick blender you can also use a potato masher for a "rustic" soup.

@Girlwhonevercooks most vegetable soups should start with a sauté of sofritto and (in my case garlic) in a nice olive oil or butter, to get the best flavour, I would not make soup without doing this basic step first

My mum always starts any soup with potato and onion. I don’t actually use a blender I hate cleaning stuff like that and usually make casserole type thing

I batch cook soup for lunches and use a massive £20 stock pot from Ikea and a stick blender.

I used to make it in my cast iron casserole dish but the high sides of the stock pot make it much easier to blend without splashes.

Any medium to large saucepan is fine - you don’t need to make litres of it. A small onion, small carrot, garlic and spices (cumin, coriander seed, black pepper, bit of salt) fried for 3 mins in olive oil, then add lentils and a tin of chopped tomatoes and a jugful of ham stock. Simmer for 20 mins. Lovely.

Would never buy a soup maker
..all that effort (and washing up) for an egg cup full of soup! Definitely agree with Pp, big pan, stick blender. Also, when you make soup , everyone thinks you're a great cook, even if its the only thing you can make

In a big pan? I've made soup for years as did my mother before me and none of us would dream of using a soup maker.

Sorry, OP, bit it is a daft question! People have been eating soup for thousands of years, long before humans worked out how to harness electricity and use it for cooking. Only very posh and/or patient people would have had a smooth vegetable puree before blenders and food processors were invented. Most people would have had broth-type soups, not much different from stews. Filling, warming, easy, cheap, tasty. Great with bread, especially if the bread isn't fresh that day, as you can dip it in the broth to soften. Important when you're on the breadline and can't afford to waste anything.

Unless a soup maker chops all the ingredients up beforehand, I don't see the point. It's just another faffy thing to wash up. Excuse my ignorance if they really do everything for you. Anyway, saucepan and stick blender is all you need.

Anyway, thinking about this wouldnt all recipes say ‘in a large pan……….’ In the instructions ? ( unless you were looking at recipes specifically for the soup maker)
