Is tahini really necessary in houmous?

I want to make some houmous for my 7.5 month old but as we have nut allergies in the family want to avoid sesame seeds for now.
What would it be like if I left the tahini out? Should I replace it with anything? The recipe has chickpeas, lemon juice and greek yoghurt, plus dried oregano. Should I just increase the amount of yoghurt and whack in some olive oil?

Well your recipe isn't houmous as such, but so what? If your DD likes it that is all that counts. I would try extra olive oil and a hint of garlic, for flavour.

it won't taste right, but it'll be edible.

I suggest veg oil rather than olive oil though - olive oil is too strong-tasting.

We'll rename it "chickpea mush"
Will try the veg oil, thanks.

I would leave out the yoghurt and dried oregano, use a mix of olive oil and veg oil. FWIW amino acids in tahini complement those in chickpeas and make the protein more useful (or something) but not an issue if you eat meat, and not worth risking an allergic reaction!

leave out the oregano, maybe add some garlic.

I have a nice alternative to humous for babies that is pureed chickpeas, garlic, courgette and sweet potato. Not humous obviously but very popular!

No it isn't. I don't like tahini much so tend to leave it out - it makes more of a chickpea spread but then i do like a touch of chilli in mine too.

I make a chickpea mush for my kids with just chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice & a few chilli flakes, they like it with pitta bread.

I adapted a delia recipie for my ds at the same stage and will still eat is as a family 3 years later

gently fry some onions + clove of garlic in olive oil until soft and just beginning to colour. Mix with rinsed tin of chickpeas, table spoon of greek yoghurt, bit of lemon juice, smoked sweet paprika and mush to desired texture. Add olive oil to taste at end
