Large containers for freezing soup

I am looking for large enough containers to freeze soup ( enough for six portions minimum) and casseroles /stews etc. I froze lots of stuff a couple of years ago for Xmas but can’t find the containers. I had tall rectangular shaped jug containers with handles that worked really well, but I can’t find anything like that to buy now.

Have you tried IKEA or Dunelm? They are my go to for containers.
Also Sainsbury's/John lewis pretty good.

I use extra large zip lock freezer bags, then you can lay them flat in the freezer and fit more in.

I do this too. Leaves much more space than upright containers.

Me three. It works so well. The food also defrosts so quickly.

Me four. No space is wasted.

Me five. I freeze the bags flat on an oven tray with sides in case of a leak then just stack them frozen in the freezer. So much more fits in.

i came on to say use bags

Another one here to suggest bags!

ArmchairXpert · 04/09/2025 07:38

I'm a Batch Lady "fan", so bags all the way for me too!

To conserve space you could make a soup base with little or no liquid, and then add the liquid after (also makes defrosting quicker).
And I agree with PP re freezer bags stored flat.

Thanks. I’ve bought soup freezer bags so will try that.

Except I opened the packet and they are tiny bags only suitable for one portion!

Soupercubes. Freeze in portions and then only use what you need

I bought the Lakeland Soup&Sauce bags , I think there's different sizes, mine were smallish. I use bags too , Aldi do some ziplock ones.
Or if you want containers, Lock'n'Lock (QVC have a good selection)

That’s what I use - I make a batch of soup of 8 portions and use 8 bags. This suits us because we only want one or two at a time. If they’re good quality bags they can be reused but note that you should just defrost sufficiently to get the soup out of the bag and decant into something else not microwave them to high temperatures.

Either gallon Ziplock freezer bags or look at catering websites for bags because you are looking at larger than normal bags.

I used to use gallon ziplocks for freezing a family portion of food ie chilli.
