MUESLI!!! DO you make your own??

Do you make your own muesli?

In the supermarket today I could not find anything satisfactory. Either too many carbohydrates (fruit pieces) or too much fat , so I decided to make my own.

Bought a basic cereal pack (oats, wheet), bought nuts and seeds and a box of raisins, and added some corn flakes for sweetening it up a little. Was great.

Does anyone else make their own muesli? Any tips?

LOL I bet that is a conversation stopper.

"What do you do, then?"

QSBIL "I have a phd in grains"

"Ah, how interesting"

Germany is very lentil-weavery so we get all of this kind of stuff. They don't know mooncups though.

Flibberty NO.

I have been to the gym twice this week. I have eaten 7 ice creams. IO have cleaned 2 houses and raked big lawn. Muesli is the way!

The Suma stuff looks good, must look for that here.

Hmm, not surprised that Amaranth is not a big seller in UK. Pigweed does not sound particularly appetising.

Flibbertyjibbet · 31/05/2008 00:54

Off to bed now and when I get up in the morning I'll have a delicious bowl of my muesli with cold milk on, then wander to the health food shop and order ingredients for some more..

No I just can't wait I'm going to scoff some before I go to bed.

jasper · 31/05/2008 00:59

Quint I am all for good food. Muesli just does not push my butons!

I dont think they know about mooncups here either, but there are quite a few lentil weaving shops, so I might go and have a look!

not made muesli as such but have made granola which is quite similar... we made it at christmas time and called it reindeer food, but DS loved it and ate more of it than I did

recipe here if you are curious.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2008 16:46

I do - rolled oats, sultanas are my basis, then I add what I feel like, sometimes bran, nuts and seeds, sometimes dates, dried cranberries, choc chips. at christmas I make it cinammon flavoured. Make a big batch that lasts about 3-4 weeks.

ivykaty44 · 31/05/2008 16:58

I buy Sainsbury own fruit museli and then add a packet of sainsbury plain rolled oats (porridge oats)

I like the fruit museli as it doesn't have nuts and then the porridge oats is 50p ish and I add half a bag to the museli to basicly make it go further and i like it like this .

I use two palm fulls of museli each morning - otherwise I can end up eating far to much of the stuff. I add it to peaches or banana and add two desert spoons of budget 39p yogurt and on a weekend morning add honey Honey is good before I go out on my bike - I go faster

ZacharyQuack · 31/05/2008 22:04

I make toasted museli. Rolled Oats, chpped nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds in roasting tin.

Heat together honey or maple syrup, brown sugar, veg oil, cinnamon, vanilla until mixed, stir over dry stuff. Roast at 150 C stirring frequently for 30-60mins until toasted, let cool then add dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, apricots etc). Yum!

Seconding BadKitten's recommendation of dried cranberries. They're lovely. I also tried dried cherries recently and they were good too. My base is rolled oats, linseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sultanas. Optional extras are hazelnuts, and different dried fruits.

I like it with yoghurt and sometimes fresh or stewed fruit.

Wonderful! Thank you all for your suggestions!

I went into my local health food shop, and was amazed to find a "make your own cereal" display. The various types were in clear cylinders on the wall, with a lever at the bottom, and you put your bag under, open the lever and "ingredients" fall out into your bag. You pay per weight, and can get different base mixes.

But it did not seem as good as any of your suggestions!

No, I am too lazy.

I buy it in bulk from Heatherslaw Mills.

maviscrewit · 02/06/2008 20:54

I never knew the world of muesli could be so entertaining. I crave muesli in the morning and am a Jordan's girl, always on top of a good layer of All Bran (does this make me odd?). I am now inspired to make my own - a make your own cereal display sounds like my idea of heaven
