for my birthday in a couple of weeks. I mainly want sweet stuff and fruit but we might need something savoury as well I suppose, any ideas?

It's to go with strawberries in a beaujolais marinade
champagne jelly
krispy kreme donuts
pimms
fruit salad
chocolate
probably some ordinanry non sparkling jelly

little sandwiches maybe? what kind of filling? I don't want anything that needs a great deal of packaging as we are going straight to the pub afterwards and wont be going home until MUCH later.

Ohh I'd go to M&S and buy their sandwiches and cut them up - scrummy

sounds lovely

some pitta bread and cut up veggies and humous/taramasolata/tzatziki to dip them in?

SniffyHock · 29/05/2008 19:38

Waitrose have just done a theme of picnics - The dinner party picnic is here. They are doing lots of new nibbly bits in store if you have one nearby. If not, some good ideas.

thought you could jsut slip the KK Donuts in there and noone would notice?

what about getting some nice french bread and a nice cheese spread/ or nice butter.. simple but its good picnic food and you can accompany it with some ham.. or salami or something to that extent then just bring a knife for spreading or just tear the bread into nice chunks...

perhaps a pasta salad with roasted vegtables in it? you could roast them the night before with tea, then add pasta, oil, tuna ..

or just crudetes (sp?) vegtable sticks, carrot, cucumber, pepper, ect and some hummous or creame frache to dip it in.

hope you have a lovely birthday!

A whole cooked chicken or two? Then you could throw the legs over your shoulder like Henry the Eighth.

oooh my idea of posh would be
French Fancies Yum. What a lovely idea - a birthday picnic.

Maybe just yummy fresh bread and nice cheese and ham would be a good plan. I can go here and get totally carried away. The donuts do bring the tone down slightly don't they! My sister is flying up from London with 3 dozen, and an extra dozen for ds when he gets back from being banished to granny's house for the weekend.

beansmum- LOL nah they done lower the tone, its your birthday so you should have whatever you want... DS is obsessed with Krispy Kreme, he could sit and watch the machine that makes them for hours, infact he asked to go down to Birmingham just yesterday to go get some KK donuts. bless.

Take a round loaf and cut a 'lid' from the top. Leaving the crust intact, scoop out the soft bread. 'paint' the inside with olive oil and pesto (or you can use tapenade). Layer the hollow with prosciutto, mozzerlla, good tomatoes, olives and salad greens until it is full. Put the lid on, and wrap tightly in cling film. Squash under some weights in in the fridge over night and cut into wedges the next day.

Trust me it is fabbola

maidamess · 29/05/2008 19:58

Coo, that sounds delish.

beansmum · 29/05/2008 20:01

ooh, sounds good. I have seen that recipe somewhere, Good Food maybe? You know it is going to rain now I'm getting all excited.

You have Pimms and Krispy Kremes - why would you need anything else?!

I like the good bread and fabbo cheese suggestion. Posh crisps; grapes; some sort of savoury pie to cut into wedges - I've never tasted it cos I'm veggie but I'm always tempted by those bacon and egg type pies.

Olives; and perhaps roasted peppers with a bit of feta and balsamic sprinkled over and some fresh herbs - good for picking at, or stuffing into a piece of bread.
