Easy recipes for 10 year old to try

DS(10) has asked to learn to cook a few meals after previously being very disinterested. Does anyone have any easy recipes that he could try (with supervision of course)? I would like them to be reasonably quick (say under 30 mins) initially.

Problem is that he is a seriously fussy eater and refuses all vegetables and most fruit, however he likes slicing these things and chicken etc but just won’t eat the former. So, maybe recipes where there is some hidden vege? He’s never been fussed on the homemade pizza thing either.

He’s seen dieticians and paediatricians over the years and they all say he’s choosing to be fussy (as opposed to medical/sensory), but this desire to cook may just be a small breakthrough so I’m going to harness his interest if I can.

I always tried to teach my boys useful things like shepherd's pie or how to make a cheese sauce but they were having none of it. What they do like to make are not very useful things like sushi (they actually liked making sushi rice and pickling ginger) and Vietnamese rolls (the ones where you wrap things in rice pancakes). They also love frying bits of chicken and rice and chopped up vegetables and soy sauce etc using their own invented recipe. I let them get on with it really as I just think the fact they are cooking is good enough. My oldest has now got into it and does slow cooked lamb!

DS1 would have been a little older, but we found this book really good - it doesn't have that many recipes, but gives you variations on each - so say baked fish, but add X to make it Italian style, Y to make it Asian style.

Would traybakes work? He can eat the chicken / sausage and the rest of you can add the vegetables underneath?

DS mainly does: pasta and sauce, omlettes, sausage casserole, pizza, stir fry noodles, and sweet stuff.

Quiche is a good one to make and is very versatile.

Vietnamese spring rolls is a really good idea.

Maybe he would like to go to the library and look at some recipe books. It’s great that he’s interested.

There’s a book by Jolene Cox called One Yummy Mummy and she does simple recipes her and her daughter do together. To be honest for that age I’d say a simple pasta dish (as in even just pasta plain or with cheese and tomatoes)

He might like James May (Top Gear) "Oh, Cook" , very simple and easy to follow.

My default easy & child friendly meal is Pasta Bake!

All you need is
1 pack of pasta
1 carton of passata
Greated cheese
Some tomato puree, a bit of oil (1 table spoon) and cream (3 or 4 table spoons) Herbs and spices of your choice- Italian herb mix is good for starters!

Boil the pasta meanwhile mix the passata with oil, cream tomato puree and herbs.
Place boiled pasta in baking dish poor over the passata and mix. Sprinkle with cheese and Bake for 15-20 minutes until cheese is melted.

Serve with salad or garlic bread if you want.

You can expand on the recipe by adding cherry tomatoes, peppers, courgette onions or meat like cut up cumbernauld sausage or chicken just make sure you fry them before adding!
