Giving up take aways

Has anyone successfully given up take aways?
We are terrible - just worked out I spent around £120 pcm on average on take aways. That’s what our family holiday cost a year.

I did, not my choice. My favourite Indian take away closed, and the Chinese one got new owners and it was rubbish. I do get some of the supermarket ones, which are ok. Surprisingly I got a really nice one from Farmfoods.

What takeaways do you normally have?
I’ve upped my Chinese / Indian repertoire but we still have the occasional chippy tea (as I don’t deep fry) and domino’s as a treat.

Gave up takeaways a few years ago even before extortionate price rises, found I could make most fakeaways cheaper and better at home with a bit of practice.

I haven't unfortunately. Usually if I want a takeaway it's because I don't want the hassle of cooking/washing up. I'm a good cook and regularly cook fakeaway style meals so when I get one it's never usually about the food itself rather the convenience. I have cut down on them massively though and when I can't be bothered to cook we'll pick up a rotisserie chicken and a bag of salad, a baguette and some coleslaw instead. Or some pakora/breaded chicken that can be thrown in the air fryer and wraps/salad etc. Or ramen and frozen gyoza.

GRCP · 11/08/2025 21:25

@Icantremembermyusernameall of them!

it’s definitely convenience for me - I’m on summer hols at the moment and enjoying cooking nice meals every night. I just know when September rolls around it’ll be back to Just Eat. I’m going to try out some air fryer dump bag recipes

Might sound obvious but I switched from takeaways to ready meals

RaisedVegBeds · 11/08/2025 22:11

We used to used takeaways or those meal for 2 supermarket curries on nights when we couldn’t be bothered to cook, and now it’s mainly just dh and I at home, I wasn’t meal planning as much. Then it just occurred to me that I could make and freeze batches of curries we liked. I’m not sure why it took me so long to think of this - so I did 3 types of curry on one afternoon and now we can grab a curry, stick rice in the rice cooker and dh gets a naan out of the freezer. It stops the can’t think what to cook / bother to cook spending.

We very rarely have a takeaway. They aren’t nice. I can cook the same things and much nicer myself. We get one maybe 2-3 times a year for dc’s birthdays, if requested.

There are so many other easy affordable meals you can make quickly on a busy night (in probably the time it takes you to order a takeaway). If I want a curry or something like that, I make it myself on a night we have more time.
