Settle this argument for us: is adding butter to vegetables and sugar to peas the norm?

Snowstorm · 28/05/2008 21:36

DH thinks it's normal and likes it every time vegetables are cooked - I think it's only for special occasions/dishes, if at all and prefer my veggies unadulterated (although I'll concede that some new potatoes benefit from a bit of butter).

What do you think/do?

i'm with you.

Clary · 28/05/2008 21:38

I put butter in mashed potato but not otherwise.

Sugar in peas

Hulababy · 28/05/2008 21:39

I have never added sugar to peas.

I only butter the vegetables if doing a proper meal for guests, etc. Not just for us generally, bar potatoes. Most veg for jsut us i just steam and leave as they are.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 28/05/2008 21:39

Heave to sugar in peas, but yes to butter.

geekgirl · 28/05/2008 21:40

sugar to peas? Bleurgh....

butter on cooked veg though, just a tiny bit makes such a big difference to the flavour

Smamfa · 28/05/2008 21:40

My MIL always sugars and butter veg. She is the size of a small house - don't do it!

katebee · 28/05/2008 21:40

I would not add sugar to peas....mint maybe? Also never add salt to vege.

Butter only used for mashed pots or in jacket pots

KatyMac · 28/05/2008 21:40

Well it's very 70's

A bit of mint & sugar do keep peas very green if cooking fresh rather than frozen

Sidge · 28/05/2008 21:40

We have all our veggies au naturel.

A little butter in mash or on new potatoes, and occasionally butter on cabbage if we have guests but otherwise nothing.

micci25 · 28/05/2008 21:41

i dont add anything to any of my veg, but mil adds butter to her savoy cabbage and it v nice. but to me adding sugar and butter to veg defies the object of eating healthy food does it not?

umberella · 28/05/2008 21:41

yep my dp (chef) lathers veg in butter.

i don't like it personally and would rather have them without it. it's a right bloody waste and might have something to do with me being able to shift some weight too.

umberella · 28/05/2008 21:42

erm, not being able to ..etc etc

FrazzledFairyFay · 28/05/2008 21:42

Butter only in/on potatoes or when we have guests / a special meal.

No sugar on peas.

Dh adds vinegar to all green veg

ScienceTeacher · 28/05/2008 21:43

DH likes butter on his veggies, but I don't bother, except for mashed potatoes.

I would not put sugar on peas. I do add sugar to the cooking water for carrots though.

MrsTittleMouse · 28/05/2008 21:43

Sugar on peas? Bleugh!
And we only have butter on new potatoes, or in mash. All other vegetables are unadulterated.

Chuffinnora · 28/05/2008 21:45

My mum always adds butter to green veg but I've never heard of sugar to peas. Aren't they sweet enough?

nellyraggbagg · 28/05/2008 21:46

Bleurgh and bleurgh to both sugar and butter on veg!

harpomarx · 28/05/2008 21:48

have been known to put sugar in pea water to cook (inherited knowledge from mum, so katymac's probably right and it's very 70's)

butter on veg sometimes, always in mash, agree with cabbage too.

usually put garlic, lemon and olive oil on veg, loads more flavour that way, can't stand plain boiled and slightly overcooked veg.

my nan was a cook and used to put bicarb in the cooking water to keep the vegetables green.

crochetdiva · 28/05/2008 21:49

butter on potatoes, yes (mashed, or new)

sugar on peas bleugh ... although my MiL does it too - she also puts loads of pepper on cabbage ... and vinegar on abso-bloody-lutely everything. Drives me mad!

DragonsEye · 28/05/2008 21:49

yes to butter on veg. no to sugar on peas.

Sugar on peas? Sounds disgusting. And I would only put butter in mashed potatoes, on a jacket potato or on new potatoes occasionally. To put it on veg routinely isn't very healthy unless you don't eat much fat elsewhere in your diet, and it is not a good plan to disguise the taste of the vegetable itself.

WinkyWinkola · 28/05/2008 21:51

Sugar to peas? What? I've never heard of that. Whatever for?

Sometimes add butter to boiled potatoes to add a bit of flavour but usually cook them in stock so that makes 'em really tasty.

SmugColditz · 28/05/2008 21:51

Not in this house, and not if you don't want your heart surgeon on speed dial.

Nice in a restaurant maybe, but it's not maintaining a healthy diet, is it?
