I haven't seen white eggs in UK for many years, probably since my grandparents stopped keeping chickens.
Just picked up a box from Sainsbo.
I've never understood why only brown were available, I'm sure they taste the same.

We got loads of white eggs over covid.
And tesco changes their boxes to say white or brown eggs a few months ago.

I have been getting white eggs for ages , I wonder if white hens are back in."fashion" that's not the word I want but you catch the drift.

bloodredfeaturewall · 07/08/2025 12:43

apparently hens producing white eggs need less feed and are more robust than those laying brown ones.
in eu there also is a switch to utility breed (more white eggs) as it's illegal to kill the male chicks in many countries.

I find the white eggs really off-putting so search the racks for brown ones .

Me too! No logical reason but I can't bring myself to knowingly eat white eggs. I'd rather go without. I'm late forties and have never known white eggs in my childhood.

Coffeeishot · 07/08/2025 14:07

But they are just eggs there is no difference in taste its still from a hen ! I had a white egg boiled egg for lunch, respectfully posters need to get a hold of themselves 😀

I've been buying white eggs again for a few years now and I was excited to see them in the shops. They bought back happy memories of my childhood when my granny used to dye them for Easter.
One of our neighbours used to keep hens that laid white eggs too, we used to buy eggs from him & he would to go into the co-op and collec the eggs for us and write my name on some of them saying that the hen must have laid them especially for me, he was such a lovely neighbour to have 😁 When he stopped keeping hens we used to buy from another fella down the lane and he had hens that laid brown eggs which seemed very exciting at the time 😆

Same. No idea why.

When I was a child nearly all eggs were white and when brown eggs came in they were considered healthy and wholesome (like bread I suppose). I can't remember when white eggs disappeared.

This. I think brown eggs were seen as more 'natural' and now things are shifting.

I had white eggs the other day and while the taste was the same I did feel the consistency was "thinner"

slightlydistrac · 07/08/2025 14:42

There's loads of different chicken breeds. Some varieties lay brown eggs and some lay white eggs.

Eggs is eggs.

if they were thinner they probably weren't as fresh

They were cooked a few days after I bought them.

Eggs can be white or brown, and it's pretty random.

In the UK historically we sell brown eggs to consumers because that's what they are used to, and so white eggs are given to caterers and food manufacturers. If you buy a cake from a shop, or eat an omelette in a cafe, you can bet it was made with a white egg.

In America historically it's the other way around, with consumers sold the white eggs and caterers using the brown ones. In US TV programmes watch and any time they have eggs for cooking they will always be white.

They may have been in the shop or wherever you bought them from for a couple of weeks before you bought them though. Fresh eggs have a thicker white and yolk and they go thinner as they age. I only noticed this when I was keeping my own hens a few years ago, I wish I still had them, best eggs ever

5foot5 · 11/08/2025 22:31

Our local Sainsbury's have been selling only white eggs for months. I don't think there is any difference

WanderingGiraffe · 11/08/2025 22:41

I was disappointed to pick up 6 white eggs this week - searched for some brown ones but they were all white!

I think the white egg yolks are less colourful and less flavourful than brown eggs. Don’t know if it’s in my mind as supermarket eggs have been brown my whole life, but I don’t rate them.
