Food ideas for late night train journey

Eggybreadwithnuts · 04/08/2025 18:36

So need some ideas for this...
Getting a late night train to London soon, getting DH from work on route to train station. We get into London mega late and need to get to hotel which is an hour away so need to eat on train.

I will be at home all day so what can I prep, take to eat on train for us both? Really dont want stodgy sandwiches or sausage rolls! I can make hot food and wrap in foil to retain heat but just dont know what to do

Flask of soup? Chicken fajita wraps made up and wrapped in foil?

Eggybreadwithnuts · 04/08/2025 18:38

Not soup but wraps could be an idea

Soup in a thermos

really good pate, cheese and french sticks

bottle of wine.

Really good bar chocolate to have with coffee afterwards. Flask brandy, ditto.

Ilovemyshed · 04/08/2025 18:42

Pasta salad or rice salad
macarons
wine!

FullOfMomsense · 04/08/2025 18:43

cous cous salad? It's hearty, good cold. Add halloumi, chicken, any veg and seasonings.

Chicken pesto wraps are usually my go to for packed lunches, I can't stand soggy lettuce salads or sad sandwiches.

We need similar for later this week, but I'm being lazy and have opted for a Waitrose vegan sushi feast and some chocolate!

Otherwise, I'd go for a baguette, a hunk of Brie, nice British baby tomatoes, raspberries and maybe some chocolate brownies.

The abniove have the advantage of not needing to lug Tupperware around during the rest of the trip, too.

notacooldad · 04/08/2025 18:56

I usually do a box meal with what ever i have.
Last week for work I had a malmasson inspired cobb sald, which was sliced avocado, grilled aubergine, peppers, roasted charred corn, grilled courgette, squash, and crisp gem lettuce, all tossed in a ranch dressing and finished with Parmesan cheese.

I also made Tabbouleh.

Another day I had freekah, cubed roast squash, grilled courgette , red pepper, pecans, cubed cheese and apple.
Anything like those salads are easy, personalised to your own taste and don't go soggy.
My rule of thumb is a grain, a fruit, a protein, a green of your choice eg rocket, as the base and add what ever you have, eg and make a dressing separate and poor on when ready.

Or you could do a falafel wrap. Its dead easy to make falafel.

Or a black bean and rice burrito. Thats easy to carry if its wrapped in foil.

or Blackbean and sweet potato quesadila

my favourite is Pomegranate and aubergine with hummus flatbreads They are good for airplane/ train journeys👍
All these are quick, transportable and tasty.

I do wish they would separate people on trains according to the smell of the food they are eating.

I make and pack myself a chicken caesar salad most days for lunch. Travels well and relatively healthy.

Lettuce won’t get soggy as long as you keep the dressing seperate until you’re ready to eat.

Big wedge of frittata or tortilla
Cherry toms, radishes
Slices of fresh pineapple or good fresh peaches
Macarons or Brownie

WhatFlavourIsIt · 04/08/2025 19:18

Id treat myself and pick up KFC on the way to the station. Plus a few of the cocktail in a can from Mark's & Sparks.

RantzNotBantz · 04/08/2025 19:23

Lamb kofta kebabs
(or ‘lamb lollipops’ made from trimmed rack of lamb)
To eat cold with fingers
Crudites and a pot of hummus, pot of tzatziki
Slice of focaccia

Bag of fresh cherries
Wedge of Brie and crackers

OK, but do you have any suggestions for food like the op asked for in the food and recipe section?

CoastalCalm · 04/08/2025 19:25

Charcuterie , bread and butter and some M&S picnic food

Mangetouts · 04/08/2025 19:32

Stodgy sandwich? Only if you use supermarket type bread.

You can get some lovely breads and make tasty sandwiches with brie and cranberry, or chicken breasts, smoked cheese and York or dry cure ham.

I admit I'm biased but you can have great sandwiches using good ingredients. I'm not a fan of grain salads as I've never had one that's not soggy or slathered in garlic.

HonoriaBulstrode · 04/08/2025 19:32

Depends what kind of seating you have. You won't have room to spread out lots of fancy bits and pieces if you're in airline style seats with drop down trays.

I'd just get a selection of finger foods from M&S.

Erm...okay.

Keroppi · 04/08/2025 19:39

Well I'd feel sick eating rich things quite late but I have a delicate constitution lol, couldn't you eat a normal dinner at your normal time?
Then you could pack DH chicken wraps, fancy crisps, Eat Natural etc bars and some other random snacks? A nice roasted nut mix?
On a long journey you could just nap and watch a show on your tablet/phone.

chattyness · 04/08/2025 19:45

I would make some lovely fresh rolls, simply buttered & filled with good ham & mature cheddar cheese, they won't go soggy. Add some fruit like grapes and bananas, you can always take some junk as well, crisps, choccie and a packet of biccies. All tasty, not stinky or messy to eat.
I like having some biccies and junk to eat in the hotel bedroom with a cuppa.

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 04/08/2025 20:53

Maybe some homemade pasties, or puff pastry hand pies. Or a smaller version of James Martins roast veg Muffalata, I added slices of steak to it last time I made it and it was delicious

Eggybreadwithnuts · 04/08/2025 21:19
