Any 'must buys'?

I'm a Lidl virgin and wondered if anyone knew of anything that Lidl does anything thats really nice?

The only stuff I've had from Lidl that I really didn't like was baked beans and tinned soup. The vast majority of stuff is really nice. My favourites are wine, cheese, chocolate and cheese stuffed chillis. The nappies are really good. They also do a range of fair trade and organic stuff (though that's quite limited in the store near me)

AMumInScotland · 27/05/2008 10:49

Really yummy fruit juice - 11 different fruits in the one I like - much nicer than plain orange.

And they often do praline seashells at a good price, if you like that sort of thing...

And gammon steaks...

my French neighbour reckons their stuff is the best available in London - he's quite the food snob, so I keep meaning to go and check it out - haven't got round to it yet. Would love to know what you think once you've done your shop.

Cappuccino · 27/05/2008 10:51

ice cream good

Cappuccino · 27/05/2008 10:51

sorry that is Aldi

mishymoo · 27/05/2008 10:52

I always buy their rice, fruit juice, fruit and veg and tinned tomatoes. Their meat is very reasonable.

ByTheSea · 27/05/2008 10:52

chorizo, parma ham, various cheeses, ice creams and treats, juices, bits and bobs...

SheherazadetheGoat · 27/05/2008 10:53

i prefer aldi for their olive bread sticks and parmesan cheese but lidl is good for pasta and basics. their coffee tastes like dirt imo. i wouldn't buy meat from either.

ProfYaffle · 27/05/2008 10:54

Oh yes, rice, basmati and jasmine rice v reasonable. I like their frozen pizzas and herb bread (not garlic) too. They sometimes have frozen tuna steaks which are good.

noddyholder · 27/05/2008 10:56

washing powder and fabric softener olive oil loo rolls deli type holiday stuff

PixelHerder · 27/05/2008 11:08

W5 dishwasher tablets (better than Fairy or Finish)

Formil washing powder tablets

Kitchen roll - the brand begins with a D - one syllable... Dess possibly?

The 'Toujours' nappies are okay but a bit hard and cardboardy compared to the 'Cien' brand which is brilliant and the same price (£5 for 50 in size 4 I think). Our Lidl used to do Cien but now does Toujours, damn.

Cheese

The thin frozen pork chops are good,my kids hate chewy thick pieces of meat but love those.

The ham in the bright Playmobil coloured pack is good, think it's got pictures of mushrooms on. Not re-formed(my pet hate).

The sensitive wipes are good.

Those socks for in the house with bits on the bottom really good quality wish I'd got more, nice designs.

Think the craft stuff is on offer this week. If the big A3 pads are in get a few of those-69p believe me that is a bargain have looked everywhere normally £2.99. Alas they were sold out in my store.

The fresh orange juice, nice and cheap.

The baked beans, bread are mank. Some of the biscuits and oven chips have hydronised fat(sp??? kids running about)in so look carefully.

I prefer Aldi but go to both as they have different things that are good. I just did my whole weeks shop for 5 £62!!!!! Last week I spent £57 at Aldi for a weeks shopping for 5!!!!!! (A couple of days were jacket or fishfinger nights though)

hellsbells76 · 27/05/2008 13:43

sausages (esp. the pork and stilton) are gorgeous. frozen salmon pretty good and v. cheap (£2 for 2 i think). pinot grigio for about £3.50 is YUMMY. um, what else do i normally get in lidl? crayfish tails, frozen mozzarella pizza, cheese hearts (SO moreish). don't forget to take your own bags!

umberella · 27/05/2008 13:45

olive oil

parmesan

passata

pasta

DeeRiguer · 27/05/2008 13:48

love it cause they spell roquefort as roguefort on receipt!
chocolate nice cheese nice
veg sometimes

fizzbuzz · 27/05/2008 14:38

Which is best Aldi, or Lidl?

Found Netto awful, no cheaper than supermarkets

MrsWeasley · 27/05/2008 14:42

I've never been but an tempted just for the A3 pads. Do they have the same stock in all Lidl or does it vary by area?

MrsWeasley · 27/05/2008 14:43

am not an of course

Sidge · 27/05/2008 14:52

Rotkohl (pickled red cabbage in a jar - yummy)

Spicy german sausages

Jaffa cakes (they call them Orange Cakes)

Paprika crisps

W5 dishwasher tablets

bigmouthstrikesagain · 27/05/2008 14:55

i worked in a Lidl for 18m I cannot enter one now w/out shuddering!

They are good for cheap choc and german sausages (not tried them as I am veggie but my mum says!)...

foxythesnowfox · 27/05/2008 14:56

The meat is good, am a bit suspect of cheap meat but we had pork chops, burgers, sausages (95% pork) and ribs on the barbie last week and I was impressed. I've also made a beef stew with their stewing steak and it was as good as Sainsburys.

Nappies are good, their jars of antipasti are good, peppers and onions in balsamic, another vote of the chillis stuffed with cheese here. Yum!

Their salad is good. Most is from Spain. Either Organic from Spain or British (air miles v organic). Nice vine ripe tomotoes, avocados are cheap.

Charmin loo rolls are on offer this week. And they are doing beach wear, gardening stuff and juicers and things. Dolls house furniture is as good as ELC. Oooh, I love Lidl me!

Rachmumoftwo · 27/05/2008 14:56

If anyone wants to be really sad efficient you can sign up for Lidl and Aldis email newsletters and find out what the good deals are going to be in advance. Lidl will be doing some great fish deals next week. I can then plan which one to go to.

Scootergrrrl · 27/05/2008 14:57

Lidl do nice chocolate brioche rolls for the children. I like the parmesan and parma ham too and all the basics like pasta, tinned toms etc are good. Paprika kangaroo-shaped crisps (if they have them in your Lidl) are also a winner!

icanonlydotigers · 27/05/2008 20:41

Don't forget a £1 for the trolley!
