What’s the fuss about poached eggs?

Bit of a laugh really, but I just don’t get it. Why the big thing about poached eggs, isn’t a boiled egg just the same and FAR easier to make? 🤣

@JeannieJo

Your thread inspired me to go out for a solo breakfast before work today, currently tucking into my favourite poached eggs with salmon 🤣

This is why we use fresh eggs - simply cracked directly over the saucepan and simmered for 3m20s.

@CalamityGanon

WHAT??!?! HOW??? Please reveal all!

Get a mug. Pour some boiling water in to it. Crack egg into it and put it in airfryer on top heat (240 on mine) for 6-7 mins. You may need some playing around with timings to get it cooked how you want it. You pour off the water and pour on to kitchen paper to dry and serve as you wish.

Poached is definitely the best! Runny yolk, delicious with some salt and butter on toast!

A well made poached egg is my favourite form of egg. Then mood depending the other ways.

‘Well made’ is very important though. It’s got to be the vortex vinegar method not one of those weird silicone things.

haggisaggis · 19/07/2025 12:02

@yakkity I can do 4 at a time in a big pan if I’m not too fussed how they look like - I don’t bother swirling the water. If I wanted to do a large quantity properly so they looked good I would do them probably 2 at a time swirling the water but cut down cooking time to just over a minute then tip them into a bowl of iced water. Then when all partly cooked reheat a pan with boiling water and finish off the cooking. I do it this way on Christmas morning when I’m making eggs Benedict for 4 (2 eggs each).

What about using one of those retro pans with four little panlets inside that you crack the eggs into and sort of steam them? They do come out tidy shapes to be fair.

That’s what I use. Perfect poached eggs every time and no faffing with swirling water

A poached egg can make an ordinary meal an absolute delight. They go well with potatoes, rice, noodles, veg dishes. Just yum.

DiscoBeat · 19/07/2025 12:37

I love poached eggs. They're so soft inside and sort of melt. Also not cooked in oil

DinoLil · 19/07/2025 13:02

Bleurgh - runny egg yolks... 🤢

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2025 13:06

Do people who don't like runny egg yolks in poached eggs also dislike them in fried eggs? I like yolks runny in both (and soft-boiled).

WaitedBlankey · 19/07/2025 13:10

All this talking about eggs has obviously influenced me - I’m making devilled quail eggs at the moment.

Fried eggs runny, boiled eggs just solid so I can mash it onto my buttery toast. I'm ambivalent about poached.

I love a runny yolk but something about poached eggs makes me want to heave. My mum and brother love them and she always says no on me makes a poached egg as good as he does.
