I’m in for bowel surgery this week and need to eat light high protein nutritional meals. I’ve got eggs so far any recommendations but need it to heal

What type of bowel surgery? I would go for easy to digest meals and build up fibre gradually after surgery, if your appetite is a problem then relax so called ‘healthy eating’ rules a bit as you need adequate calories too - protein is important but so is adequate calorie intake. Eggs are great protein as is meat, fish, cheese , peanut butter, milk, tofu, soy milk products, houmous. Pair with carbs like Pasta, rice, bread potato, noodles, couscous etc to go with it and fruit and vegetables to tolerance but choose from Beans lentils etc may be a bit on the hard side to digest initially but it really depends on what surgery you are having. Yogurts, milky puds, fruit and custard, rice pudding, cheese cake, sponge and custard with a little fruit? If in doubt, ask to see a Registered Dietitian when you are in hospital or speak to a specialist nurse on the ward if you are under one.

I’ve had 3 cancer surgeries this year, so been doing a lot of these.

High protein yoghurt (skyr, etc) with berries. I also add some whole almonds many days, but depends how your digestion is. I have this for breakfast most days.

Salmon however you like it baked, with green veg (tender stem broccoli, french beans, snap peas)

Lots of miso as good for the gut - I get the itsu miso sachets, boiled water from the kettle with tofu of your choice or with noodles and a boiled or fried egg and greens

Roast whole chicken, baguette and veg (I did a lot of asparagus this spring)

That’s some really good ideas. I’ve just got no appetite at the moment.

eat little and often, higher calorie foods and drinks where possible to minimise weight loss, drink nourishing drinks like milky type drinks, soup and bread or cuppa soup made with warm milk? Build up gradually, get well soon x
