Things you didnt believe were so easy to make from scratch

After saving for ages I finally own a kitchen aid stand mixer and Im living my middle ages dreams 😆

Had a go at making butter at the weekend and I cant believe how quick and easy it was, Im not sure I'll buy it again.

Going to give Mayonnaise a try tonight as we also get through loads of that.

Im trying to reduce our UPF's - has anyone started making things from scratch that they were surprised how easy it was?

The main problem with making stock is not to pour the essential bit down the sink......it goes against instinct! I put a pan under the colander in the sink before I start just to make sure I'm not wasting it....

And this is why I never make my own stock now. I have ended up howling in rage over the sink one too many times!

Bread including pizza bases, flatbread, naan bread etc.

This. All sorts of bread products

MissConductUS · 07/07/2025 21:03

We started making pizza at home during covid, and still do. We bought a nonstick pizza pan on Amazon with holes in it that helps get the crust crispy. I cheat a bit by buying the dough premade and freezing it.

What's the benefit of making your own butter? Apart from fun, if you enjoy that kind of thing!

Reduced double cream can be purchased cheap and made into butter and frozen into portions or a block. So much cheaper and can flavour it with chilli flakes, garlic etc

Elderflower14 · 07/07/2025 21:08

Homemade garlic and cheese tear and share bread... 💕 💕 💕

RobinEllacotStrike · 07/07/2025 21:19

Pizza dough. Easy to make, delicious & you can freeze any extra raw dough.

Ditto on the hummus. A mum bought a home made one to a party and I was super impressed. Then a few years later I made my own after a) discovering tahini and b) realising how reasonably priced it was... and then c) felt like a right idiot for being so impressed that this other mum had made her own when I saw how simple it was...

Pizza. Base is just flour, oil, salt, water, sugar and a bit of yeast mixed up into dough. Then just a couple of spoonfuls of chopped tomatoes and oregano for the sauce, grated cheese and whatever toppings I'm in the mood for. 10-15 mins in oven. Start to finish takes about half an hour. I never buy ready made pizzas anymore.

Tomato soup. Half an onion, butter, two tins of chopped tomatoes and some vege stock. Delicious! I usually throw in a half cup of lentils and any vege I need used up for extra nutrition.

Garlic bread. Melt butter on pan, crush some garlic, mix it up til it smells nice and garlicy, then throw in the bread and cook until golden on each side.

Will you share your soup recipe please?

You know the way a parking thread requires a diagram by law? Well this thread needs a law that you MUST post the recipe.

Elderflower cordial.

Make a batch every summer and save a fortune.

Ooh I'd love a good recipe for this.

But even the dough is very easy to make if you buy pizza bread mix - just add lukewarm warm water and olive oil, and extra plain flour to dust it with when rolling it out.

Agree with pickles, jam etc. Easy and they don't even take that long to make.

They take me ages to make. I spent all day chopping apples and onions to make chutney and it all reduced down to a couple of kilner jars. I was so disappointed. I thought I'd have rows of jars. But couldn't face another day of peeling and coring apples.

Pretty much ALL the breads, there is a time and a place for a Warbartons loaf…
Why has no one mentioned carbonara sauce yet? I Iove carbonara at an Italian restaurant but even the “best” fresh sauces are claggy and have a gummy mouth feel. Once I mastered the art of making it, I can’t look back. Google bbc good food carbonara for recipe :-)

schooloflostsocks · 07/07/2025 22:54

Sushi! I was sure it was too difficult but now we make it every week and it's pretty neat and tasty

Cleanthecoffeemachine · 07/07/2025 22:56

Coleslaw - just need a sharp knife and a big bowl to mix it in. Much nicer than shop bought.

SabreIsMyFave · 07/07/2025 22:58

Cheese on toast. 🧀🍞

I'll get my coat.

Quirkswork · 07/07/2025 22:58

Meringues. Always avoided trying to make them and now that's my staple pudding in the summer.

Cranberry sauce. Tres easy and much nicer than bought stuff.

Labneh. Which makes me a cheesemaker, really.

Christmas cake.

Marmalade.

Oh yes that's an excellent recipe.

Focaccia, once you master it, you’ll never buy it again, costs a fraction of buying it for double the amount and it freezes well too. I have made butter (and speciality butter too) but it’s not worth the amount of cleaning it takes for a food processor, it costs more than buying it and most of all, we eat it way too quickly (see also focaccia on this point!) I do make hummus, also very easy (stick blender so goes in dishwasher) but don’t bother with pesto as need to buy so many herbs etc and the whole point of pesto pasta in my house is it’s a shelf stable store cupboard meal

minnienono · 07/07/2025 23:01

And yes cranberry sauce, so easy (I make cranberry and orange myself)

BingoWasHisNameOo · 07/07/2025 23:03

Different variations of soup, I batch cook and then have some every day for lunch in autumn/winter. Don’t follow recipes just use up old veg or just whatever I fancy.
so much nicer than buying soup ready made.

We do this, there are 3 different types in the freezer at the moment.

Blessed are the Cheesemakers @Quirkswork 🤣🤣

MarthanotMarfa · 07/07/2025 23:09

Ceasar Dressing…ridiculously easy if you have a nutribullet/whizzer of some sort. No UPF and impressive. Not massively chesper but hugely better.
