Tinned sardines??

Even though I've read it's ok to give babys tinned sardines...I'm just concerned that they may be too salty. My daughter is eight months and I want her to have the benefits of oily fish but surely there is too much added salt. Any advice!?

Oopps - strayed in here thinking it was another thread on Ryanair )

Sorry Joso, can't help on the salt front but would be more conserned about the tinny bones in these little fish.

Don't worry about the bones - the cooking process they have gone through makes them very soft, so they can be mashed up with the flesh - you don't realise you are eating any bones.

What about tuna Joso? My baby daughter loves that and I either give it to her in a sandwich or I mix it with pasta which she loves.

the salt content (according to what it says on the cans) is actually very similar for all tinned fish - tuna, sardine, mackeral, salmon - and also similar for fish in brine compared with that in oil. Having said that I gave my ds tinned fish of all varieties from around 6-7 months. You can get boneless sardines if she doesn't like the bones (they are too soft to be harmful). If you are worried about the salt, you can of course cook fresh fish for her (trout or salmon fillets are easy and freeze well).

Tinned tuna isn't as beneficial as sardines for the Omega oils. I wouldn't worry about salt at all. If she likes them, great.

thank you all very much....v.useful...looks like sardines for dinner!! (she'll probably hate 'em now!)

RE: tinned tuna

I spent ages the other day looking for a tin of tuna without added salt. I was so suprised to find that it is almost every single pack! Anyway in the end I found ONE - Princes's Yellowfin Tuna. It still has a sodium content but not as much as the others. I just hope DD likes it after all that trouble!

I know tuna in brine has added salt but surely tuna in spring water is OK???? (Haven't any in to check label.) I will be very miffed if I find it's just the same!

soothepoo · 06/01/2003 21:42

Janh, just checked - tuna in spring water is exactly that, with no added salt (the Sainsbury's brand, anyway)

Oh, thank you, soo, that saves me having to storm into Sainsbo's!
