Thank you for all the great suggestions. Keep them coming as I’m always on the look out for new ideas (I always do some veggie dishes even when only BBQing for meat eaters.)
Obviously I couldn’t make everything you all kindly suggested, but will refer to this thread for future BBQs. A lot of what I did make was related to ideas from this thread so thanks again.
I’m always curious on these sorts of threads to know what the OP finally made so here goes:
Homemade dips (hummus, guacamole, tsatsiki) with tortilla chips, & sticks of various veg.
For the vegetarians: shop bought veggie burgers topped with cheese and portobello garlic mushrooms. I baked the mushrooms in the oven then flashed them on the BBQ. (these vegetarians eat all cheeses, not going to question that as it’s easier for me!)
Veggie sausages
Meat eaters had home made burgers; gorgeous sausages from our butchers; and chicken marinated in the same marinade as the seitan (in separate bowls to be clear!)
Then the following with enough for everyone:
mini corn on the cob
Peppers stuffed with savoury rice (baked in the oven then flashed on tbe BBQ)
Kebabs: seitan marinaded in tomato purée, soy sauce, oil, mixed dried herbsskewered up with courgettes and red and white onion. 1 full one each for the vegetarians then scraped the rest off the skewers so tbe meat eaters could try it.
Homemade coleslaw
Mixed leaf salad
Pickled cucumber salad
Tomato salad
Friends brought the desserts: brownies trifle; lemon drizzle cake
I knew what they were bringing so added a bowl of mixed berries and ice cream.
That sounds like a lot but we served things in stages over a long afternoon. Leftovers were rapidly refrigerated and some guests took stuff away, the rest enjoyed by us the next day.
We may have also consumed rather a lot of alcohol!
For those who didn’t read the OP, we have a smaller BBQ which we keep for veggie food only and of course use separate implements.
