What should I do & how long would it take to get a 2lb (1k) ham edible for this afternoon?

I would bring it to boil in water and then throw the water away twice. then i'd do nigella's ham in coke!

ham in coke is in how to eat - it tastes yummy! sorry - not sure on how long boiling takes though.

treacletart · 24/05/2008 15:47

Came to suggest the same... here's Nigella's recipe I'm never going to cok ham any other way now

JRocks · 24/05/2008 15:48

I'm a big fan of the ham in cherry coke - from Nigella feast She says bring to the boil in water, throw the water away and rinse off ham and pan, then boil in cherry coke for an hour and 10 mins per kilo...

mmmmm

Do the boiling, throwing the water out bit, and if you don't want to cook it in coke then use water with either apple juice or cider. I also add an apple, a clove of garlic and an onion to the boiling mixture. ( I cook mine for about half the time like that, then take it out, cut the skin off, spread mustard on it and brown sugar and roast it for the remaining time.)

oh, yum, f.toaster, am going to have ham next weekend again to try this out.

how long do you boil/roast for?

Delia Smith's timings for 1 kg 750g (3 1/2 lbs) are simmer for an hour, roast at 200C for 45 minutes (you need to put 150 ml of cider or your cooking "water" into the tin when you put it into roast by the way). I adjust the timings up depending on the size I've got - to be honest I add a bit more as I always worry about meat being properly cooked!

Should have said - it's best to increase the boiling time as the sugar will burn if you extend the roasting time too much.
