Thermomix - yes/no?

MrsKypp · 25/06/2025 16:24

A group of us attended a Thermomix demo and it was a lot of fun. We also really enjoyed the food!

It seems like a very useful machine, but is rather expensive at about £1,300.

I heard they're very popular in Italy and Portugal where they're known as a Bimby instead of Thermomix.

Can't decide whether to get one or not. What do you think?

I'm wondering this, and I am also thinking about whether to get one and currently finding out more. In my friendship group, they are very popular. Some even upgrading perfectly good ones for the new model. I heard that chefs use them too. It can do a lot - but what would you do with all the other appliances you wouldn't need?

MrsKypp · 25/06/2025 20:27

They seem really popular don't they! The new model has such a great screen and Cookidoo appeals to me too, so convenient. But for the price it needs to be something special.

That's impressive that chefs use them.

I know 😂what would we do with the other appliances?

Go for it - amazing machines, I love mine and use it nearly every day.

SpruceMoose · 25/06/2025 21:34

I've had one for about 5 years now and I love it. Use it for all sorts of things.

yodadud · 25/06/2025 22:23

My 11 year old model is starting to die but I’m poorer now than I was 11 years ago so I’m struggling to find the money to upgrade. It was definitely well worth the investment 11+ years ago and although i’m not much of a chef it is used on a regular basis.

BarnOwlFlying · 25/06/2025 22:25

My Spanish friend loves hers but I can never really see the need, I think it would just be another appliance cluttering up my kitchen.

Schoolrefusa · 25/06/2025 22:30

I use mine several times a day usually - absolutely game changer for home cooking . I couldn't work out what friends were on about and even when I bought it I was nervous (I paid over a year with a 0% interest deal but still a bit outlay ) but I have not looked back . I now couldn't live as happily without it .

Schoolrefusa · 25/06/2025 22:35

(This week without feeling I've wasted much time cooking I've made pea and mint soup, bolognese risotto (new recipe we hadn't tried before and was delicious), sticky toffee pudding with sauce, and milk bread. Random but we always have a huge variety of stuff now .

it also means the members of my family who previously couldn't cook now have no excuse plus enjoy it more !
I will send them a recipe and ask them to make it.

Hermiaxx · 25/06/2025 23:07

It is special and I love my thermie - highly recommend!

I am much poorer than when I got mine 12 years ago but I would still happily get another one if it ever broke!

Hermiaxx · 25/06/2025 23:09

The pea and mint soup is fab @Schoolrefusa and reminds me I haven’t made this for ages (so many recipes …..)

Neodymium · 25/06/2025 23:11

I’m on my second one. I got my first in 2011 and my second one in 2019. The first one was still going I just wanted to upgrade. I use it for everything. Especially good for cutting and sautéing onions and other veggies. I don’t necessarily cook the entire meal in it now as my kids are bigger and I need a bigger amount (3 teenagers and I like to have leftovers), but I do all the initial chopping and sautéing steps and then transfer to a large pot to finish off.

YouOKHun · 26/06/2025 00:43

Is there still a weird culty thing where you get a big discount if you sell some to your personal network? There were quite a lot of people where I live who lost money trying to flog them to friends. I believe they are a good product but expensive so very difficult to shift. Perhaps Vorwerk have changed their business model?

SunMootStars · 26/06/2025 00:53

Love mine - I use it for soups and sauces mostly. sorry to derail the thread, but is there a thread for sharing thermomix recipes? I’m stuck using same old reliable recipes on mine and would love some new recommendations!!

Schoolrefusa · 26/06/2025 09:46

*SunMootStars *if you start one I'd definitely update as regularly as can. I use ours for just so many things as I get carried away on Cookidoo. The things we make the most often are probably custard, Persian flatbreads (we dip them in olive oil and balsamic glaze and friends rave about them ) , 'normal' flatbreads, versatile vegetable soup, Tuscan soup, the broccoli and pepper salad, and different risottos.
what I'm less good at is using it intuitively which my friend who's a better cook manages all the time. I prefer just following recipes blindly as it takes all the effort out of it for me!

Schoolrefusa · 26/06/2025 09:47

Ps I find it very good to make our food healthier though as I'll often only add half the sugar it suggests to things eg in the custard.

MrsKypp · 26/06/2025 17:01

Thanks all for your replies! Very helpful and interesting. I've decided to order one 😃

@YouOKHun I haven't heard about that selling thing. We went to one of their showrooms so it's direct with the company, not via anyone else.

@SunMootStars great idea!! YES!! let's definitely share recipes here.

At our demo we had the most delicious soup: "Tomato and red lentil soup". We also had cheese scones that were tasty and a lovely broccoli salad.

Hermiaxx · 26/06/2025 20:19

I hope you love yours as much as I do mine! I bought mine many years ago and have no understanding as to what@YouOKHun is referencing.

Also agree what a great idea @SunMootStars - we are a dairy free household and it’s been a huge boon to my cooking but might be limiting for others! I have become quite good at reading recipes and adapting for my thermie though!

I do know Heston is a fan and I did look at his recipe for ‘meat fruit’ but I don’t quite have that much dedication!

Schoolrefusa · 26/06/2025 21:30

*MrsKypp *that cheese scone recipe also works really well with smoked salmon instead of cheese if you want to vary it ever: I was taught that on my first demo and made that version several times in my enthusiasm too!! I do hope you have as much fun with yours and glad you can buy direct as it seems an odd selling system .

Notmyrealname22 · 26/06/2025 21:36

I’ve owned one for 10 years. I use it several times a week. In fact, most of my cooking involves the thermomix. It has definitely made me a better cook. I make a lot of things that I just wouldn’t attempt without it.

Lavendersong · 26/06/2025 22:26

If you’re going to use it and can easily afford it then go for it

Thisismyalterego · 26/06/2025 22:52

I don't have one - they look great but not sure I'd get a lot of use out of it these days. However, I do have one of their vacuums, courtesy of Mumsnet around 8 years ago. I can honestly say it is the best vacuum cleaner I've ever used and I honestly don't understand why they are not more popular here. Nobody I've ever spoken to has even heard of them, which amazes me. Anyway, if the quality of the thermomix is anything like the cleaner, I would think it definitely worth considering.

SparklyBrickViper · 28/06/2025 13:55

I’ve owned one for a few years and still use mine daily. Other than the noise I love it.

I (as already mentioned) make soup often, and also it’s great for sauces.

I also make jam, chutney, relish etc (not on huge quantities) which is especially handy now fruits from the garden are starting to get ripe.

Christmas dinner prep it’s a godsend.
