King prawns ideas for 8 month old?

My baby has enjoyed every food we’ve introduced so far. She really enjoys olives, feta, beetroot and all sorts! We just feed her baby friendly versions of our own meals. I don’t like prawns but want to continue on this path of her enjoying everything! To clarify, I don’t give her whole foods, I just blend until there’s a a few chunks she can deal with.

I have been given a load of king prawns and would like to make her something, her dad is getting them in chilli and garlic butter but I’m not sure how to make them up for baby in a way that she will enjoy

I’d just do them plain to start with. You’ll soon know if she likes them.

Prawns sautéed in cream sauce (add cream cheese if you can ) with rice but … I think you need to wait couple of years before giving shellfish to kiddies due to potential allergies

Deffo start giving whole foods try a bit of baby-led weaning alongside the purees. For the prawns I would just serve plain cooked as is tbh! Look at the ‘solid starts’ website I found it so useful!

The earlier the better for allergy prevention is the guidance now not to wait 🙂

Prawns were DD’s favourite, still are. I butterflied a few king prawns and did them in garlic oil I think the first time, but we’d done plenty of other finger foods before them.

Im with you, dont really like them. And can’t really think of a way to blend them that doesn’t seem off putting honestly! I’d maybe try do do them like fish cakes/ patties - very finely chop the prawns and mix into in very soft mash? Or maybe with mashed avocado and some lemon juice?

Yes for sure.. but needs to be cautious . Ds was throwing up every time he was having them. I reintroduced after 4 again

You do do them as thai fish cakes, but without very strong flavours, so mince them up, mix with a little bit of minced spring onion, garlic and ginger, very small amounts so its not too flavoured, on the other hand nothing wrong with flavour early on

When they're minced they go quite solid in a little pattie, you just shallow fry them very briefly

How about prawn toast? I’m not sure if they are salty or not great for babies but a little bit could be a good taster?

RightSaidFrederica · 21/06/2025 22:25

Slice them finely and just give her a bit to munch on. Once they’re sliced the texture is right for little ones.

And yes to the PP who said give them the sooner the better!

I'd also just give her the chance to pick up and try. My now 10 month old loves them and probably first tried them around that age. I also like this recipe - https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/sweetcorn_fritters_46558 - it's pretty easy to modify (e.g., no salt, etc) and so last time I made it I added cooked salmon and prawns and it still worked fine. I have a batch in the freezer and can give her one of those while I get the rest of a meal ready.

These easy sweetcorn fritters from the Hairy Bikers are the perfect accompaniment to fried chicken or pulled pork, but also good as brunch with avocado.

Two oldest DSs both loved prawns. We just gave them to them whole and they were the perfect finger food.

I absolutely wouldn't give sea food to a baby. They are the biggest source of food poisoning apparently.

I love seeing my now 12 month old enthusiastically gumming a whole king prawn - he's been doing so since about 8 months, no ill effects. To start with I butterflied them but now just give them whole, they're a great finger food. Sometimes he has them with pesto pasta but mostly just pan fried in a little unsalted butter. He loves it!

Yes sorry. Probably does. But I still wouldn't.

They are fine if cooked properly
