Afternoon tea

Friends are coming next week and I'd like to do afternoon tea for them. We will be having lunch in arestaurant, so tea won't need to be huge, or too much fuss but I would like it to be impressive with as little effort as possible. It will need to be v quick and easy or easily prepared/bought in advance. We will be 4 adults and 5 children.

So far I've thought of:
Egg and watercress brown bread sarnies (because most of the children will eat these);
Salmon and cucumber sarnies (because all adults bar me will eat these);
Scones with fresh strawberries and cream;
Pots of Earl Grey;
Homemade ginger beer.

What else do you think would go, would make them all think "ooh lovely" and will make me look like a goddess without having to lift much more than a pinny?!

I also put on the children's sandwich plate :

Cubes of cheese
Apple slices
Nice ham, cut into manageable pieces.

Sounds very lovely.

Tell me about home made ginger beer, please.

Ooh lovely ideas thanks.

Homemade ginger beer is in a Jamie Oliver book. I'll see if I can find a link.

homemade wholemeal short brea: nicer than normal shortbread. Just substitute half wholemeal flor

I would like to see a nice cake -- lemon drizzle, madeira (nigella recipe is excellent) or just a vicky sponge and cream...

BoysAreLikeDogs · 23/05/2008 17:59

Cor that looks dead easy.

ZZ - I ALWAYS like to see a nice cake! Friend is a chef and usually turns up with one but perhaps I ought to make one too.

Pofaced - I am a bit scared of shortbread; haven't made it since Home Economics lessons, whcih is ridiculous as I love baking.

Any more savoury ideas that don't involve baking?

How about some chopped up raw veggies with dip and a fruit salad to pick at?

stealthsquiggle · 25/05/2008 01:33

Are we limited to savoury ideas here? The best received 'guilty pleasure' I have come across is mars bar crispie cake!!

janeite · 25/05/2008 12:30

Oh god, I love Mars Bar cake. I have plenty of sweet ideas though; just wondered what to serve with the sandwiches. Fruit salad is a good idea too.

Although I was supposed to go shopping today for it all but the weather is so freaking awful that I am in fact sitting here instead, with dp's dressing gown on top of my clothes cos it's cold!

Is the weather going to be this bad tomorrow as well? Grrrr.

cheese straws?

I love those

when we went to Crewe Hall for afternoon tea we only had a variety of sandwiches for the savoury.

However, at The Mandeville Hotel, the Men's Afternoon Tea consists of Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps, Beef and chicken satay and grilled vegetables!!

janeite · 25/05/2008 12:43

"Men's" tea? That is so funny! What did the ladies get?
