1970s Sardine “pizza” scone (cooking for two)

Hello, I’m trying to find a recipe to surprise my parents with. They were reminiscing about a scone type based pizza with sardines in tomato sauce on top that was in a “cooking for two” recipe book, I think the st Michael’s one from ‘78 as the cover looks familiar. Does anyone have the original recipe they could show me?

It’s on eBay for a couple of quid delivered

I think I do. I’ll check when I’m home later and take a picture for you.

Ooo thanks @Forgottenmyphone ! Fingers crossed it’s in there!

yes @CountryQueen the book is easily available, but I don’t actually know if it’s definitely this one, it just feels familiar, so I don’t want to start collecting recipe books trying to find it!

This is it, I think (from the 1978 book).

Quick sardine and tomato pizza

100 g / 4 oz self-raising flour
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
50 g / 2 oz butter or margarine
2x5 ml spoons dried mixed herbs
1 egg, beaten
Milk
1 onion, peeled and sliced
2 tomatoes, skinned and sliced
1 x 125 g / 4 oz can sardines in tomato sauce
50-75 g / 2-3 oz Mozarella cheese, sliced
Fresh parsley sprigs to garnish

Cooking Time: 20-25 minutes
Oven: 230°C, 450°F, Gas Mark 8

Sift the flour into a bowl with salt and pepper to taste.
Rub in 25 g (1 oz) of the butter or margarine until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add the herbs, egg and sufficient milk to mix to a softish dough.
Shape into a 15 cm (6 inch) round on a greased baking sheet.
Melt the remaining butter in a frying pan and add the onion.
Fry until soft and spoon over the dough.
Arrange the tomatoes on the onion.
Arrange the sardines on top with the juices from the can and cover with the cheese.
Bake in a preheated very hot oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until well risen and the cheese is lightly browned.
Serve hot garnished with parsley.

What on earth are they on the front of that book?!

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 14/06/2025 16:02

I love a ‘70s cookbook.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 14/06/2025 16:04

I can 100% guarantee that this will not live up to the fond memories, especially after 50 years of eating proper pizza!

needtobeloved · 14/06/2025 16:07

Fab book! Front cover is Lamb Noisettes with Herb Butter

MousePolice · 14/06/2025 16:09

My mum always made a scone base for pizza! I’d completely forgotten that. I imagine the recipe above would taste nice in its own way but not much like a pizza.

Turmerictolly · 14/06/2025 16:10

Struggling to find tinned sardines at the moment. I use them for a sardine pasta dish which is very tasty.

NoodlesMcGee · 14/06/2025 17:23

@Turmerictollyweirdly, I was lamenting about not being able to find (cheap) canned sardines recently. Plenty of expensive options still available. I wonder if there’s a shortage somehow.

hicat · 15/06/2025 16:09

Ooooh thanks for these! Brilliant! A typed and photo version, super kind of you both.

I agree that it surely can’t live up to actual pizza, but I’m very willing to try a sardine scone type thing.

on the sardine front, not cheap, but I treated myself to a Waitrose tin of sardines with chillis (a very pretty tin) and they were delicious.

Those Waitrose sardines are delicious. I stock up 9n them whenever I’m near a Waitrose since our local branch closed.

I used to LOVE a scone based pizza, I had totally forgotten about them
