Best way to freeze homemade soup?

Trying to batch cook for my dad, as he is really poorly. I have made root vegetable soup and add a little milk to make it a bit creamier. What is.tje nest way to freeze soup and do you have to defrost it to cook it? Trying to make it as easy and simple for my dad as possible.

Chinese takeaway plastic tubs with lids are perfect as you can stack them in the freezer with labels on. You can microwave from frozen. Just keep stopping and giving it a stir.

You can freeze it anything. I use plastic containers with a lid. You can use sealable bags. You can use giant silicone ice cube trays

I freeze in small rectangular “Tupperware”, then when frozen, I flash dip into hot water & de-mold them, then put into individual plastic bags so they stack nicely but you can equally put several together in ziplock bags. ( more likely to stick together & use up more space)
you can leave to defrost in the fridge, or zap in microwave from frozen,

I use the tubs from the Chinese

I freeze then reheat soup (I use ziplock bags), I don't defrost first, just tip the frozen lump into a pan and warm through (no microwave).

What is his appetite like? When my Nan was really unwell (she had a virus with which she kept getting better then worse for months) I made lots of high calorie/nutrient soups and froze them in large ice cube trays (I already had lots from freezing foods for DS during weaning - the large NUK one was a good size) and then once frozen transferred into a large ziploc freezer bag so she could choose how big/small of a portion she could manage at once, as otherwise she would stress about waste if the portion looked too big.

I use zip lock bags and freeze soup in a thin flat layer. Easy to store and quick to thaw/heat up.

I use the tubs from the Chinese

I bought a box of them new.
For bulk making/ freezing lasagna portions.
They are so useful - and it wasn't a bad price for the extra storage capacity.

I use a silicone muffin tray. after frozen put them in a freezer bag. easier to portion and quicker to defrost than a bigger block.

Perfect thank you 🙂

I use these. The handles take up space in the freezer compared to using rectangular tubs but it means you can stick it straight in the microwave and eat it out of the tub, and it's easier to handle than a rectangular tub full of hot liquid! I tend to defrost before use just to save time microwaving, or you have to do a lot of short bursts and stir throughout.

I get a freezer bag (zip lock or something that seals really well), pop it inside a pint glass, jug or something slim and tall enough to put the bag in with the opening folded down over the edges, pour in the soup and it naturally pushes the air out to sort of vacuum pack it and then freeze flat.

MassiveOvaryaction · 10/06/2025 19:01

Horrified by some of the suggestions on here tbh. Soup and sauces are round and therefore cannot possibly be frozen in rectangular takeaway boxes! Dh thought I was joking when I said it initially but he's come to realise I'm right. So for us soup is frozen in pots like @MiddleAgedDread's (great for office days because you can take it out of the freezer in the morning and wang it in the microwave at lunchtime) or pots from when we've bought premade soups/sauces. Or big ice cube trays if I have to

ScottBakula · 10/06/2025 20:05

We can't have soup with sharp corners can we @MassiveOvaryaction 😁
