Seeds with my yoghurt and fruit?

MonkeyTennis34 · 02/06/2025 20:08

On a quest to be more healthy, I’ve been having Greek yoghurt and berries (strawberries , raspberries and blueberries) with goji berries, turmeric, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Are there any other seeds I could add to increase the nutritional value? Or anything else for that matter?

Sesame. Poppy.

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 02/06/2025 20:15

I buy different mixed seed mixes and also stir through a spoonful of milled flaxseed (which needs to be kept in the fridge).

Blanketenvy · 02/06/2025 20:15

Chia seeds are good.

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 02/06/2025 20:15

Pumpkin, chia

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 02/06/2025 20:15

Chia seeds, ground flax seed

MonkeyTennis34 · 02/06/2025 20:18

Oohh I forgot about chia seeds and I have some in the cupboard.
Haven't tried flax seeds…do they have a taste?

I use Linwoods ground flax, linseed etc. There are many different varieties with added things like goji berries etc. All very good for adding to breakfasts. And I also add chia in overnight oats, so that it soaks overnight. I make this with oats, yoghurt, milk and frozen berries.

Here is a link to the linseed:

Ground flax seed, super food ( not whole seeds though they don’t digest)
keep it in the fridge

I also sometimes do overnight oats with berries and chia seeds, adding toasted nuts as a topping - walnut and brazil are my favourite.

SpaceOP · 03/06/2025 10:29

I make granola to have with yoghurt and it allows me to throw in a huge mix of seeds and nuts. My latest batch was oats, pecan nuts, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds and I added a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter. I usually buy a big bag of mixed seeds and add those but haven't been able to get my usual ones recently so just using the chia and flaxseeds I have in the house anyway.

Any nuts work. I also have bags of mixed dried fruit which I add as required.

I've also been making what another MN poster tells me is called "fridge jam" - where I boil down frozen mixed berries with chia seeds and some water and some honey (i actually tossed in a little port last time which was nice) until it's thick and then keep that in the fridge to have with the granola and yoghurt. This ups the variety of fruits as well becuase those bags of frozen mixed berries have quite a few different types.

I like to add a spoonful of oat bran , adds fibre, thiamin, iron and magnesium

BellyPork · 03/06/2025 11:55

Fermented seeds are a nutrition powerhouse; try buying raw seeds and fermenting them.

TaupeRaven · 03/06/2025 11:58

A (lighthearted) word of caution: I recently added flax and linseed to my usual combo of sunflower and pumpkin seeds, which I have with yoghurt, cacao nibs and oats. The textures are very different and one of those wee buggers is so gritty and crunchy that I keep thinking I'm crunching a bit of tooth. 0/10 do not recommend this level of anxiety with breakfast, have tossed the whole jar and started again with the friendly seeds

dumpling123 · 03/06/2025 15:08

Ooh! I’ve started trying to be a bit healthier in the mornings too so eat a chopped apple and chopped kiwi (both with skin on), some flaxseed crunch from Aldi and dried cranberries with natural yoghurt or Greek yoghurt (depending on which is in the fridge). It’s yum and my bowel feels great as a result!

There’s a fab women’s health physio on Instagram called Aoife Harvey posts as womenshealthdublin who has converted me to skin on kiwi!

dumpling123 · 03/06/2025 15:10

Also sometimes add some Syllifor - it’s flavoured psyllium husks and 💩💩💩 brilliant! Had some bowel issues post pregnancy and have become obsessed with chasing a ghost wipe ever since!

MonkeyTennis34 · 03/06/2025 15:32

@dumpling123
Ha! I’ve always enjoyed eating kiwi skin, glad to hear it’s nutritious!

Ground flax seed tastes like crushed Weetabix for me, so no offensive taste.

smallstitch · 03/06/2025 17:22

I love ground flax on top of mine, it has a nutty taste

Is there any crunchy/gritty texture to the ground flax? I'm honestly never usually fussed about texture and love a mix of soft and crunchy, but the most recent seed mix I bought has scarred me!!

@SpaceOP would you mind sharing your granola recipe, please? I keep meaning to get back into making my own and yours sounds delicious.

flax

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 08/06/2025 06:51

I'll add hemp seeds to the suggestions above.

It's very easy, somewhat to my surprise.

I use roughly 3 cups of oats, and 1.5 cups of mixed nuts and needs. Then a generous 1/3 cup of wet ingredients - about half honey half organic rapeseed oil (this is nb i think - its got very little.flavour vs olive.oil, but feels lighter than using a sunflower or general cooking oil). I sometimes add a couple.of tablespoons of good quality peanut butter. Generous sprinkle of cinnamon and some salt.

A tip I saw on insta is to taste it. I dont know why that had never occurred to me before! And sometimes I add a bit more honey after I've tasted it.

Use my hands to mix it all up and get it coated and cook in a lowish oven - about 160 non fan as my fan is broken - for 25-30 minutes, stirring it through half way.

Let it cool.completely before putting in a container and separating the chunks.

We dont like ours too sweet and we dont mind not having clumps but if that's important to you I would add a minute more honey and oil.

Also, I have used a mix of honey, syrup and agave depending on whats in the house!
