My dcs don't consume much milk, they do have tons of other diary stuff so I'm not that concerned but I'd like them to drink more milk (or any!)

They like hot chocolate. so that's winter sorted.

However I'm hoping one of you will tell me all I need to do is to make milkshakes is blend up some fruit and mix it with milk and it'll be yummy?

Is it that easy? Which fruit works well? Strawberries? Blueberries? Need I add anything else?

TIA

Bananas and mangoes are great to use in milkshakes. If you let them go over abit then they are abit sweeter.

Fruit with seeds - strawberrys, raspberrys -are ok, but the seeds can be abit unappteizing to little ones. You could strain the milkshake, but it can be abit of a faff !!

Enjoy

I love bananas, milk and a scoop of vanilla icecream... is yummy!

stirlingmum · 21/05/2008 15:46

ds loves banana milkshake - Put a glass of milk in liquidiser, add chopped up banana and a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you want and whizz up!

sneekpeeks · 21/05/2008 15:46

NB

It is very easy - whack everything in a blender and whizz up for a min or 2
(sorry, sounding abit like Jamie Oliver now !).

Maybe you could get some fun straws to make it a bit more appealing to your DC

savoycabbage · 21/05/2008 15:49

banana and peanut butter, give it to the dc (this is Nigella) and then put some expressp coffee powder in what is left for yourself. I bloody love it.

savoycabbage · 21/05/2008 15:57

And strawberries are lovely but you have to sieve it. What about milk jelly. Just follow the jelly packet but use half milk half water.

all jolly good ideas thank you.

and as it happens I have an unusual amount of bananas and a mango. sorted

Another vote for bananas, we add frozen raspberries or fresh strawberries sometimes too you can add rasps straight from the freezer. Make a big thing about which colour cup and straw, bit of a ritual. just started adding ice cream and it goes down very well. We use one of those hand held stick it in a jug whizzers and let DS (since he was 18 months -ish) do it himself. Partic loves it if we add raspberries separately because you can watch it turn pink. Annabel Karmel suggests adding icing sugar if you need it sweeter but DS has never known any different so have never tried. Have friends that whack in fruity yog or fromage frais sometimes too.

Enjoy!

Banana and oats is great. In fact DP has put all kinds of cereal in his, including a chocolate museli with banana which was delicious.

Oreos and milk in a blender.... mmmmmmmm!

Anchovy · 21/05/2008 16:42

We whizz up banana and milk and put oats in and have it as a cereal for breakfast. You can add some whole fruit on top or just stirred in.

If you need to sweeten it, I just use a little bit of maple syrup or agave nectar.

Banana, milk, peanut butter and a little maple syrup is also popular (step back from the glass if you have any weight issues as I think it has a zillion calories, altho good for children)

Kewcumber · 21/05/2008 16:43

what on earth is agave nectar???

Anchovy · 21/05/2008 22:22

Oh, its my new food ponce thing.

Basically it is a natural fructose - from agave cactus. Comes in a bottle and looks and tastes v like maple syrup. But - and here's the science - it has much lower GI than sugar so doesn't do the sugar crash thing.

My parent are both diabetic and I periodically am tested for it and/or insulin resistance so have always been interested in such things.

You can get it in Waitrose and Sainsbury, so not exactly exclusive. Not particularly expensive.

I recommend it!

Fresh spinach, almonds, milk, tofu, banana. Sounds disgusting but is a very pretty light green (fairy bedroom wall green for my girl, and snail sludge for my boy) the sweetness of the banana takes away the bitterness of the spinach. Whizz in a blender with some ice cubes.

PortAndLemon · 21/05/2008 23:52

If you slice and freeze a large banana then whizz up in blender with half a pint of milk and a dash of vanilla extract you would swear that the resulting milkshake had ice cream in it, even though it's just fruit and milk.

S1ur · 21/05/2008 23:55

Cheers, excellent! I am absolutely doing this tomorrow.

They are all yummy sounding, well with the exception of the spinach milkshake which 'sounds' vile, I may have to try it just to see... Unless it is a cruel trick to make me drink something revolting? hmmmm.

Off to freeze sliced banana

OOh very tempting Lemon - how are the (low-alcohol) portandlemonettes?

Kewcumber · 22/05/2008 09:44

I'm IR too (and lots of diabetes in the family) I'll look out for it.

SSSandy2 · 22/05/2008 09:53

never thought of putting peanut butter in a milkshake. Might try that
