My vegan friend is coming to my barbeque...it's normally a meat fest courtesy of DH...so what do you give a vegan...?

...at a BBQ when everyone else is slavering over hunks of lamb and then eating meringues and/or cheesecake?

Apart from BBQ veggies on sticks my mind is blank

A nice hummus sandwich & a bit of salad?? Presumably she won't want to eat anything that's been anywhere near a meaty barbecue anyway. mmmmm....meat...

mouseman · 20/05/2008 16:04

corn on the cob with red chilli is good - wrap in foil to cook then remove to brown.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/05/2008 16:04

Oh god, that's tricky. How strict is s/he? Can you even grill veggies on sticks on the same grill you're using for the meat?

She could eat some salads?

iheartdusty · 20/05/2008 16:05

kebabs made with chunks of veg including butternut squash and tofu which you marinated in soy sauce & molasses

veg sausages/ burgers

corn on cob

apple tart for afters?

NB make sure you have a separate bbq or grill pan - she won't want your meat juices!

mouseman · 20/05/2008 16:05

actually, you could wrap anything in foil and it wouldn't be meat contaminated - potatoes, sweet potato, mushrooms etc

suzywong · 20/05/2008 16:06

dont' bother with anything on the barbie

it's really not worth it, trying to keep it all separate at hte very least will be anightmare

turnon your oven and roast some sweetcorn on the the cob, red and green peppers, pumpkin and whole garlic cloves in olive oil with any dried herbs you ahve and sea salt and black pepper.
serve it on a plate with some vegan mayo from Holland and Barrat or the like and some tomato salsa and woven lentil type blue corn chips

and a nice bowl of strawberries.

if you want my advice

Miggsie · 20/05/2008 16:06

We have 2 BBQ so I could separate the food...if I could think of anyhting to cook.

You can't BBQ pasta can you?

Lentil or bean burgers are ok, but they can fall apart if you'er not careful.

Will have a think.

Miggsie · 20/05/2008 16:08

Ooh some nice ideas, we have 2 BBQ as DH buys new ones most years as he is a serial BBQ buyer, I don't know why...always wants the next model (cheaper than cars!).

Vegan mayo..ooh, I'd forgotten they did that...I suspect you cannot BBQ tofu though...!

HaventSleptForAYear · 20/05/2008 16:08

I did a thread about a veggie gluten-allergic non-dairy bbq not so long ago.

here

cluckyagain · 20/05/2008 16:09

How about falafel? They come ready 'done'(M&S, and lots of supermarkets do them) so you just bung them in the oven and serve with hot pittas, humous and BBQ salad - vastly delicious and terribly easy. 99% certain they're vegan....just check on the packet though!

Vivace · 20/05/2008 16:09

Oven idea much the best. Outside someone will bung a sausage on the vegan barbecue, or pick up the tofu burger with a meaty fork or some other sin.

cluckyagain · 20/05/2008 16:10

or felafel perhaps! How do you spell them?!!

OverMyDeadBody · 20/05/2008 16:13

When I was a vegan I would have apprecited lovely vegetable kebabs most, and bbqed corn on the cob, and lots of salad and pita bread and dips/sauces. If you have two bbqs then she'll appreciate some bbqed food I'm sure.

My mum does big trays or roasted vegetables when we have bbqs now for those that are vege or vegan.

OverMyDeadBody · 20/05/2008 16:14

falafel and humous as well as some vegetables would be best.

mistlethrush · 20/05/2008 16:15

I regularly do vege kebabs including tofu squares that have been marinaded and then fried to make them a bit less likely to fall to bits. Small shallots great on sticks but you need to mostly cook first (eg in microwave). We always have 2 bbqs going and most of the inveterate meat eaters also want to eat some of the vege stuff. If you want to do a more substantial thing other than corn (as suggested already) you can get two portabello mushrooms (the big flat ones) - put one on some foil, add a bit of homous and some basil leaves, put other on as lid then wrap in foil - will probably take about 40 mins to cook properly on bbq.

cluckyagain · 20/05/2008 16:16

I was just thinking that too Overmydeadbody - then she has a choice AND still has BBQ food.

Miggsie · 20/05/2008 16:19

I have a BBQ frying pan...I'll reserve it as meat free.
And place the BBQs in separate parts of the garden...perhaps with a "privacy curtain"

Actually this thread is now making me hungry, thanks for the posts, it is so long since I was veggie I'm out of the habit.
We used to be the only "alternative eaters" so long ago that on our company's residential courses (6 weeks long!) we had a perpetual running battle with the canteen manageress who insisted that you COULD have macaroni cheese if vegan and if there was a piece of chicken in the veggie pancake, then it must have jumped in there spontaneously!!!!
We used to call ourselves "the veggie/vegan league of starvation". But we were THIN!

Falafel? Gosh, I used to make them...from scratch!!!! Amazing what a can of chickpeas can do, super stuff.

I reg BBQ for vegan/vegis - I use a disposable BBQ and a seperate set of tools.

Large flat mushrooms are fab, I then stick them in a bun like a burger.

Slice corgettes, aubergine, butternut squash, peppers longways (marinate if req) and plonk them on - kebabs too fiddly/fall off imho.

Corn on cob, boil for 5 mins then brown off on bbq.

Remember that many vegi sausages will not be vegan.

I'm sure the person wouldn't mind being asked what their fave bbq food was.

choosyfloosy · 20/05/2008 16:20

corn on the cob bbqd with SOY SAUCE is fantastic imo

Fennel · 20/05/2008 16:26

The vegans I know tend not to be keen on veggie sausages or things that mimic meat. So felafel, tofu, etc are OK but not veggie burgers shaped like hamburgers.

Baked potatoes and baked onions were popular at barbecues with one of my vegan friends, do them in foil well away from the meat.

shrooms · 20/05/2008 22:50

Veggie kababs - some chunks of mushroom, pepper, tofu, onion, and courgettes, thread on to scewers and brush with a mixture or soysauce, tabasco, and garlic powder/ crushed garlic. Grill or barbeque and serve with salads, pitta breads and loads of hummus. Worth just emptying a tin of chickpeas in to a bowl and adding basil, garlic and tomatoes with some salt and pepper. Very lovely and nutritious salad that I would be happy to get!

MegBusset · 20/05/2008 22:53

You can get vegan marshmallows from veganstore.co.uk, v nice toasted over a BBQ!

melpomene · 20/05/2008 23:00

Oh, I got all excited at the prospect of vegan marshmallows (have been longing for veggies marshmallows for years), went to MegBusset's site but found that they are 'out of stock and not available until further notice'.

MegBusset · 20/05/2008 23:01

Oh , sorry to have got your hopes up! Hopefully they'll be back in stock soon...
