Rice cookers

Does anyone have one? Are they worth it? Do they give significantly better results? Are they easy to clean?

I have only ever cooked in a pan of water but it is easy to boil it over. I am interested to know if I should invest in one of these as we do eat rice with dishes quite often, at least once a week.

If you have one that you like could you recommend a brand?

Thank you

Ah, a while back I was also thinking of getting an electric rice cooker. I searched on a popular shopping site and one of the things that popped up was the Joseph Joseph rice cooker. After reading the reviews I decided to try it and have never looked back, I REALLY love it!

It’s not an electric rice cooker but just a lidded plastic pot that goes in the microwave. You measure out the rice and water depending on the number of portions you want and then stick it in the microwave for the required time and it comes out perfect! And considering how much we use it, it’s nice and robust too. Recommend it so much!

I finally took the plunge and got one when we were having our kitchen re-done last year, and it's brilliant.

I find it very easy to clean.

Do they give significantly better results? - I felt I could cook rice well on the hob, so might not be much better, but it is much easier - set it and forget it. And far easier when cooking things like brown rice or short grain rice (which my rice cooker has functions for) that I used to avoid. I love the preset timer function and the keep warm function mine has.

I have also done a few one pot meals in my rice cooker which I loved such as this chicken adobo.

I have this one - it can do both small and large quantities of rice perfectly. The website suggests 1 cup of rice per person, but I find 1/2 cup rice per person about right, so this can do 6 people with portion size. I like that it is small and light so I can hide it away in the cupboard rather than have it live out on the counter. I would recommend my one and I would 100% replace it if it suddenly broke, I wouldn't be without one now.

I have a rice cooker , the simplest kind possible ( not electronic) and find it very useful. My DIL is Chinese and she introduced hers to me. Rice cookers can make both dry or sticky rice depending on what kind of rice you use. . I don't like most cooking gadgets but if you have room to store one you will never cook rice on the hob again ( except maybe a risotto).

Love my rice cooker. I think it's a Tefal and the best feature for me is being able to delay cooking until later, so I can get everything in when convenient and eat it later!

I love mine. It’s the single most used kitchen gadget I’ve ever bought - makes perfect sushi rice every time. I got it from Yum Asia, and if it ever broke I’d have a replacement on the way before you could say furikake.

We have one and it’s a game changer honestly. I’m terrible at cooking rice, DH is good at it generally but this makes it perfect every single time (and it’s really easy to clean).

Joseph&Joseph microwave one here
It is amazing . I always used to overcook rice , even in the microwave (Pyrex bowl) it never worked
This cooks to perfection.
( I don;t work for them Grin )

Another vote for the JosephJoseph one. It’s by far my most used kitchen kit and has been for years. I love doing wholegrain rice in it.

I have a YumAsia one and I use it all the time. It takes longer than just cooking it on the hob, but I don't really mind as I tend to plan meals in advance anyway. The best thing is that it has a timer you can preset so I can put it on the timer in the morning and the rice will be ready at dinner time when I get home from work and am trying to feed two gluttonous toddlers as quickly as possible.

I love my rice cooker, look for Japanese or Korean brands which are amazing. The cooked rice comes out kind of smooth and polished. However likewise I prefer using jasmine or Korean short grain rice in it as haven't had good results with basmati/long grain.

heavenisaplaceonearth · 20/05/2025 23:19

Brilliant. Keeps the rice warm and cooks it perfectly. I have a yum Asia and it’s so so helpful. Add an airfryer and you can have fish, chicken and steamed or roast veg cooked while you take a shower.
The bowl is super nonstick so, so long as you don’t scratch it, cleaning is wipe under a running tap.

Yum Asia one here. I deliberated for ages as they are ££ but i use it at least once a week.

I've recommended them to loads of friends. I really like the timer function - I often set it up to have rice ready when I get in from work to accompany batch cooked food like chilli that I just nuke to warm up.

I’ve had loads of cheap Argos ones in the past but now I have a Yum Asia one and it’s great. I highly recommend it.

Same - after a couple of cheap ones I bought this Yum Asia one.

I bought mine on eBay via a charity shop for £60. It was brand new and they had quite a few so I assume they were donated some returns from the manufacturer.

I've had the JJ mw one for years & it's great.
I recently bought a Judge small electric one, perfect as I'm usually cooking for 2.
I love it, it cooks & then keeps rice warm until I'm ready for it.

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

I will research all the brands recommended here. Sounds like these are definitely worth it.
